Tried to use the wrong type of battery. The small red wire between the starter relay, rectifier and fuse going to ignition started to smolder. The fuse is still good but no spark from plug. Do you think I damaged the rectfier? It will crank with remote but not when I turn the key. I am not getting any spark at the plug.

Put a meter on the rectifier output while cranking the engine to see if you get DC out. If you reversed battery polarity, you may have burned up the CDI and key switch along with some associated wiring.

With the battery disconnected, you should get high resistance against the rectifier output and switching the leads a low resistance. If it looks like a short both ways, you blew the diodes in the rectifier.
