Well I've started.

Started with this:

Last year (or earlier this year, I simply don't remember anymore) I went out and grabbed one of these things (only it was cratered):

See specs here: http://www.motorbikes.be/en/Honda_VFR_800_1998.aspx

Today I FINALLY started making the cage for the motor. We're having a cookout tomorrow so it'll be next week before I start pulling my 250, but hopefully by next weekend I'll have the new motor test fitted in the chassis.

I'm debating whether I'm going to connect the two spars to one another. As it is I could do it, but doing it would require removing the throttles if I ever want to drop the engine...which isn't a bad thing but I do like the idea of breaking the engine out with minimal break down.

As it is there will be grooves welded onto the GK's frame that the spars will slide in for chain tension.

That's all for now...

I had to convince myself I really wanted to do it haha. It's hard to break the buggy down when it's been running so beautifully. But I may snag another GK13 or a GK06 with a busted motor and swap mine into that and make a little extra money. There's a few available right now nearby.

It's a great engine. The V4 was the best way to get an good mix of an I4's peak output with a v-twin's torque delivery. Very graceful powerband, and a very reliable engine. It's actually a little more powerful than I would have preferred, but I wanted that 60lbs of torque. That's what will help me climb.

Jackshaft off the stock reverse box. It's holding up pretty well for a number of other guys and I'm not the type to try and do clutch dumps on race slicks.

Okay so I just put about 25 miles on this thing toting the new neighbor's kids around...all girls and every time I thought I was done more girls came out...and I know after I get this VFR lump install I am going to want to make this thing QUIET. Or at least quieter than this CN with the "sport" exhaust Roketa sent out. My head is pounding.

Any suggestions? I'm considering a muffler from something like a Civic. Needs to be something large enough to no hinder performance too much, but needs to be small enough to be practical with the buggy.

Positions everyone!

Of course the spars I setup are wrong. Has to be something. I was under the impression that two of the motor mounts are parallel to the ground...but they're not. Which means my #1, if I mounted the spars the way I had intended, would be too high. Now I have to sort out some kind of cleverness to correct that issue before I can really continue.

Put some slicks go to the dragstrip and it will pull wheelies all day long.

Mak, this is gonna be a cool build. I almost put a GSXR600 motor in it but my boy started driving it so no way I was gonna do that. The other thing that concerned the heck out of me was the power to steering front end issue. I think I have mine sorted out from my post and will update that soon.

Good luck and let it rip.

Cheers, Bo

I got my jackshaft, bearings, and sprocket carrier in today. I just need to make a frame to support the bearings and then I can be ready to actually start mounting the motor. I'm hoping to have it start up by Sunday.

Running a 18t on the motor...I'm probably going to go try and find a bigger sprocket for the shaft. Biggest I could find for the "W" mount was a 16t. I can get a 22t sprocket with a larger mount...I was hoping to avoid that huge mount but I may not be able to get away from it. Right now it'll be geared out at 135mph...which is a tad excessive...

Got my bearings mounted. I'm glad the blocks allowed for some play in the alignment...I couldn't get it all clamped down enough to keep things from warping. Oh well...the axle is straight and that's what matters most.

I'm hoping that this winter I'll be able to cut it out and make a cradle that hangs the motor with the jackshaft/bearings and allows tension adjustment between them. I'd like to be able to make it an assembly that will simply bolt to the buggy and can be removed as a single piece.

That's been the point of getting all of my materials and parts in hand over the last several months...when you have everything available you can move rather quickly. This is also the easy part. I don't have the tools (or skills) to make a really nice clean build such as yours was. I am, however, quite capable of making a strong, simpler structure, and that speeds up the process quite a bit as well. Really all I was required to do was build a sturdy structure that could bolt to the motor, build a strong and flat platform on the buggy, then connect them.

As of yesterday I finished welding the platforms and guides...need to cut my grooves for sliding the lock bolts. I need to grind off all the rough stuff and round the corners...I'm going to try hard not to have a lot of sharp stuff everywhere. I need to finish welding the rails for the motor and cut off the extra stuff to complete it.

Then it's on to the stuff that will take me a long time...like extending the wiring harnesses, sorting out the clutch, and then all the little stuff.
