Ive had the buggy about a year. Havnt had many problems up until now.
The buggy starts and runs fine. When I take it for a ride it will run for aboout a minute and then sputter and die. In order to restart I have to apply full choke to get it started. It will sputter and die constantly. If I let it cool off all is fine for about a minute again.
I have changed fuel filter, plugs, wires and coil. Nothing seems to be working. I think I am down to a clogged carb or a bad ignition module inside the distributor. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
sounds like a plugged up carb, did she sit for some time???
also check fuel pressure from the pump, the buggy will run on gravity feed from the tank so this is an easy test to do, just bypass the pump altogether.
this does not sound like an ignition problem, but id check for loose wires at the coil, these guggies are known for this.
also look for a loose conection at the fuel shutoff "anoid" on the carb.
these checks will only take a few minutes and I bet you will find the problem.

It is possible you may have to adjust the float in the carb.If in the past riding trips you've hit some large bumps or woops. The
float will bounce so much it bends. I've had to rebend mine twice already. As soon as the stall happens turn off the fuel flow from the tank and remove the top part of the carb. It's about 6 philips head bolts.
I agree with the rest of the posters. It sounds like a fuel starvation problem. If you have not done so, download the engine service manual and go to the carb section. It contains exploded views of the carb and operations. It is a Sticky at the top of this engine section.
1. check your fuel pump: Pull the fuel line off the carb inlet. Point it into a container to catch the fuel. Remove your ignition coil wire so it won't fire and crank the engine over. If fuel pumps out freely, your fuel pump is good. If no flow, check that your petcock is not clogged. It has a screen inside the tank that could be clogged with debris. Just as Slimefink said, remove the line from the fuel pump and see if it will gravity feed out. If not, the blockage is upstream from there.
While you are at it, check that all your vacuum lines are intact and not leaking.
2. check you needle valve: If your float is stuck or sticks in the up position, it will shut off fuel flow to the bowl. The advice on checking float level is valid if the tab got bent and the float level is now way low. I don't see it getting bent in that direction, but you never know. If bent in the other direction it will cause a fuel rich condition (float level too high) and cause stalling.
3.check for clogged jets: Once you remove the carb top to check the needle valve, remove the two jets at the bottom of the fuel bowl and make sure they are clean. Try blowing some compressed air through the jet housings to check the carb passages.
4. The shut off solenoid at the rear off the carb will not allow you to idle if it has lost it's electrical connection. It should not affect mid throttle operation. You will be able to start the engine and keep it running by blipping the throttle, but it will not idle if the solenoid is not working. When you turn your key on you should be able to hear it click on. No click means check the wiring connection.
5. Pull the spark plugs and check to see if they are wet with fuel...ignition problem, or bone dry...fuel problem.
From your description, it appears that the fuel flow to the bowl is the problem. When it sits, fuel slowly fills the bowl, so when you start it, it will run untill it uses the fuel up in the bowl. Full choke creates a rich condition that will allow the remaining fuel to almost start it up, but there is not enough fuel in the bowl to keep it running. When you let it sit, fuel will gradually fill the bowl and then it will start and run...repeating the process.
My guess is stuck needle valve or blocked fuel lines.
Let us know what you find as the information will be helpful to others who may encounter a similar problem.
Thank you guys so much!!! I will check all of the above right now. You guys and this forum ROCK!! Ill check back in later and let you know the results.
1/4" of sand laying in the bottom of the float bowl. cleaned all the jets , sprayed some carb cleaner through it. It has never ran better. It even idles with no choke now. Wouldnt hardly idle when it was brand new. Thanks a million guys. I owe you guys a beer!
I'm suffering a very similiar problem. The buggy has been towed home four days in a row now; not because I hadn't inspected the carb/fuel pump - they "appear" to be operating to spec. But, for some reason, anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour of steady drive time, the buggy decides to suddenly die. Engine temp seems OK; so naturally, we decide to turn it over and it starts right back up - idles good; however, just as soon as you load it up with any measure of throttle, it dies instantly. And there you are, one ticked off buggy owner again I really don't get it!
Once back at the garage we review all relative components, and find nothing unusual. Well, OK, we'll try again tomorrow, fire it up, run the course, 30-60 minutes later SAME THING AGAIN. Obviously, it's got to be heat related, electrically I mean, because if the bowl was stuck, clogged jet, or the pump was bad, then it wouldn't allow you to go out the next day and do it again. I don't know what to do; it's not like I'm gonna' get any local dealer attention. Any ideas? _________________ "Honey, I didn't know we had a budget?"
