I finally got the buggy out to the hills and was able to put the new transmission through it's paces. It is a bit noisy compared to the old one. Just more gear noise and whine.

First thing, you can throw out the calculated rpm vs. speed data I posted on this unit. I do not know what the gear ratios are, but they are not what I was told they are. I used my new GPS (Merry Christmas) to plot top speed in the first three gears.
1st - 18mph @ ~6000rpm
2nd - 26mph @ ~6000rpm
3rd - 45mph @ ~6000rpm
4th - not enough space

These numbers are significantly lower than I thought they would be based on the gear data available. All I can say is that the data is either wrong, or the final ratio is much lower than the original 4.35:1. Either way, first is a lot lower, second is like the old first and third is like the old second.

There is this hill that I have never made it up. Well today, that is no longer true. I started the climb in second and then down shifted to first and powered up and over the top. It is a 200' elevation change and I have tried it three times previously each ending up with me running out of power and having to back down. This time the low first just dug the ITP Holeshots in and pulled me through. I did the hill four more times just to make sure I had it's number.

If your a trail rider, I highly recommend this change over. First will pretty much crawl along. I spent most of my time in second and third. Definately a lot more shifting than with the old ratios. I used to just leave it in second and go, as third was pretty much useless. Not anymore....

later...Mick

View of my riding area, you can just see Lake Elsinore in the distance. This part way one of the hills.

Thanks for the report, I don't even own one of the big buggies and I enjoyed reading that.

Hey Mick,
My tranny was a bit whiney also. Either now I am used to it or it quieted down after break-in. Nice feeling to finally beat the hill eh.

I also thought the tranny seemed lower geared than posted. But, I LIKE. 4th gear I am sure we will see around 60. Who cares! I can not think of any place I can drive this 60 anyways. The important thing is we now have usable trail gearing that makes great use of the motor. Multiplys the fun factor two fold.

Thanks for the replies. Just a note, the speed vs. rpm information is probably close but not exact. It is hard to drive, watch the tach and read the GPS all at the same time. lol.

45mph on a narrow, rough trail seemed a LOT faster. It would be nice to know what the actual ratios are from a purely technical standpoint, but they are much lower and much better suited for buggy use.

You guys with the 1000cc buggys are going to be able to motor. And, after you guys do some hop ups...watch out. I can't wait to hear all about it.

later...mick

tHE jOYNER ALREADY HAS THE TRANNY THESE GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT. Originally the 800cc was coming with a very high ratio tranny that made 1st way too high and 4th usless.
