Ya but it might bust something else. The energy absorbed by the bending metal wasn't transfered to the driver. True, I suppose crumple zones are good, but I know with my truck and car they lead to stupidly expensive repairs for very minor bumps.
Makes me want to fab up some sort of bumper myself when I get a buggy.... Maybe something slightly curved to deflect the impact.
