exactly. But be careful what you say there are a few planted on this sight as well. They are very well organized. Do something. Before its too late. Sad

Vanet,
This is not meant to be a smartassed question....
The reason I'm posting it on an open forum is so your answer can help others....
You say to start a local chapter... okay I'd like to do that...But how do you get started... I have contacted the local snomobile clubs... but they all think we just want to get back on their trails...wich really in not true (mosly swampy low lands) And now protected lowlands...
I have a local law enforcement officer that I'm freinds with who rides with me from time to time... But I don't know the 1st thing about becoming a non-profit organization, I don't know any of the legalities of it, but now that I have been classified as permantly disabled...I have some time on my hands, I don't have enouph money to donate any(my paychecks went from1100 a week to 326, but my mortgage stayed the same) and most people around my area don't either...
The local "truck" clubs are okay for trucks but they have such deep ruts that it sucks to ride their trails, smaller buggies than mine would get swallowed up in the ruts...
So If anybody has a Idea of how to get the ball rolling I'm all ears...R

Rman,
Don't mean to step in on your question to Van but where you ride how are trails classified? You mention truck trails and sled trails. Do ATVs have their own trails? That's how it is on public land in MI: Truck Routes, ATV Trails, and Snomobile Trails. Dirtbikes & ATVs share that trail system so here if you want to get active you would join one of their organizations like the CCC (for MI).
http://www.cycleconservationclub.org/

I Googled "keep trails open Michigan" and got a bunch of hits from rider organizations & politicians who claim to be fighting to keep our access.

I've talked to the officers of a couple local organizations and I think I'm going to join 1 or 2 of them. They need to hear our voice. There's plenty of in-fighting amongst members of these groups. Dirtbikers don't want to share trails with quads, who don't want to share with buggies, who don't want to encounter Jeeps, etc, etc and snowmobilers don't want to share with anyone. I should say SOME. Environmentalists can fan the flames of these "motorsport separatists" and by dividing us, can one-by-one conquer us.
Fortunately most dirtriders are sensible people and the activists & officers I've spoken with are open minded. They see us all enjoying the same sport, but on different machines.

The best thing to do is to try to join an existing organization. It cost quite a bit of time and money to start a non profit organization. What you can do is start a club and then join in with one of the national organizations. Keep in mind that there are alot of different people who want to keep public land open. Hunters, loggers or woodcutters, atv ers, campers, cattleman. Try not to alienate anybody. Our group is made up of a wide range of the people above. We do all have differences of opinion on how things should be done, but we all agree that public lands belong to the public and should remain open. Thats what we fight for. Try to make the truck guys and the snowmobile guys realize that closing public land hurts everybody. I am not familiar with your area but here the majority of public land is controled by the forrest service. Go to the agency that is responsible for the problems in your area (blm, forrest service, epa, park rangers) and let them know you are opposed to closeing off road areas. Write your congressmen and senate representitive, do research on the net and find out when bills are up for vote that are going to adversely affect you and others. Many bills pass and become law before anybody knows about it. You will find that in your efforts you will come across like minded people which will be the beginings of a local group. Good luck

Guy,
you weren't stepping on anything...Your good to go Very Happy
Van,
The local sled clubs around here are mostly a joke... I have approached a few...But like I said earlier they think we want to ride their swamp/protected habitat...I'll Talk to some 4 wheel drive truck clubs there really is nothing close, Wisconsin has a good set up for off roading but they relly pick on out of staters... They dole out HUGE FINES...for piddly crap and if you don't have the cash on you your rig is getting impounded, and your going to court and pay the fine and then some...So I'll just see what I can do locally...Thanks for the input...R

Unfortunatly too many people get caught up in there little world and miss the big picture. It is the same here alot of people who would really benifit from protecting the off road areas are too stupid or lazy to do much. This is usually the majority, that is why this country is getting the way it is. Keep looking and talking to people and you will find some like mined ones who want to make a difference. Sorry to hear the local scene isnt very good for you R-man hope you still get involved. Van

You make good points. But unfortunatly people arnt as fair as you might think. We own 640 sections of land here and recently the Forrest service banned us from riding on our own land. This was not even for recreation but to work cattle. Over 80% of land that is closed to off road riding is done with out a vote of any kind. That figure goes up to near 100% when it comes to public land. PUBLIC land. The goverenment thinks they own public land. They do not. We the people do. But because everyone thinks they do they get away with alot. Unless we wake up and stand up and look at the laws and realize the US government is breaking laws every day then we will continue to loose more and more rights until we have none. Including our RIGHT to ride on public land. Our RIGHT to drive is not a privilage that is just what they want you to think so they can govern it. I am not some crazy trying to start a revolution I just think its time for us to stand up. Check out our local organization www.cmlua.com and then contribute to, join or start one near you. This can be fought but we have to organize just like the opposition. You have alot of friends to help you just have to get together. The hunters, fisherman, ranchers etc are all fealling the problems brought on by the different groups who are using money and influence to skirt the laws. We now have several law suits that we are prepared to take to the surpreme court to fight this, but the only way to get permanent change is to let the polaticians know that the common man does not want his libertys and rights taken away. This seams like it ought to be common sense. But there are to many out there that support things like communism and socialism in our society. I have talked to many people who feel the same way as I do but the few radicals who want to control every thing are winning right now. Do something.

this may be a stupid question, but.
How can they ban you from riding on your own land?

Phil is absolutely right. I was actually told that we only own the land to pay taxes on it and that the govenrment is duty bound to protect all land for the greater good of the people. If you think you actually own land to do what you want wait until some "endangered specis is dicovered, or they want to build a freeway, or they just like the way your land looks. The point is they dont need a reason. It is called imminent domain. They can do what they want when they want and there is nothing you can do about it. That is why I am so adament in fighting and defending personal rights. These things have all come about primarily since FDR was in office and every year we loose more and more rights, while the average person just goes on watching TV and pretending it doesnt affect them until one day it is too late. There is even a certain moderator on this sight that claims to be for personal rights but his actions speak differently. He probably doesnt even realize what he espouses. Most people dont even think about the situation enough to have an opinion. A great deal of others have made the right choice but dont want to take the time to get envolved. Still others dont think they can make a difference. At this point it is going to take major reform to take the country back we are so far gone. Lets hope it isnt too late.
