Welcome SnowAnn, I think I saw you up at Walker Valley on April 12th. Check out the gathering at Moses Lake on Memorial Day weekend. There will be two other Joyner 650's there plus other buggies.

I am in Brisbane Australia and have recently purchased (about 4 months ago) a Kinroad XT 250 GK.

I have been reading a lot of very interesting articles, reviews (of both buggies and dealers), maintenance and mod write ups. GREAT STUFF! From my research I have formed a plan of mod upgrades. First though, I have taken to get it repaired. I broke it!

The splines on the shaft into the reverse box and inside the coupler have shredded down to a nice matching cone shape. -Not all that suitable to transfer drive as it turns out- Thankfully, the engine shaft is in perfect condition. I put this problem down to two elements. 1. I did not do the obligatory checks before heading out such as tightening bolts etc. an mount on the engine had broken, and some bushes had been allowed to fall out, or deform allowing the reverse box to move away and down causing uneven wear on the shaft. 2. Cheap Chinese materials.

If the metals (and methods) used in the construction were of a decent quality, I have no doubt that it would still be running well.

I have commissioned a local machine shop to repair and improve the mounts, and modify the drive system by using some kind of rubber donut.

My research tells me that the engine is a Chinese copy of a CN250 from a Honda Helix Motor Scooter. I am still unsure weather the reverse box is part of this arrangement or is sourced from some other setup. Anybody??

Mods:

Fuel - I run on E10 98 Octane for best fuel performance

Exhaust - I have replaced the exhaust with a muffler and pipe supplied by a local Muffler shop here in north Brissy. he recommended a muffler from a MINI as this would have the same pipe dimensions as the the engine exhaust output and minimise noise. I have concluded that the only difference between this type and a super duper stainless one, is about $500! Since the old one fell off, I was kinda forced into doing this prematurely.

Intake - I plan to get a high flow filter in a snorkel setup and have it mounted up behind the seat. this is not to allow trudging through waters 4 ft deep, but to minimise water entering the intake from serious plunges.

Jets - I will undertake the services of a DYNO tune to maximise the performance from the 250 after the air intake is done.

Weights - This I am still researching, and need some guidance on. I wish to improve the hill climbing ability hopefully without severely effecting the top end speed (but that is secondary). I have seen only 'suggestions' of weights and recommendations to use 'slider' weights. ANYBODY?

Since I am in Oz, and the place of purchase does not seem to keep many parts in stock, (even just replacement parts - forget mods) which I was assured of before purchase, I have to hunt elsewhere.

So... In short, Is the Reverse Box part of the CN250 as a whole or from something else, and if so, what is it and where can I get manuals for it? Any suggestions on the planned mods, and specifically, the weights for the CN250 given extra power expectations of the other mods. Lastly, where can I source these parts from (AUS preferably).

Ok, so apologies for the long preamble, but its all the stuff on my mind, and better to have all the details for an overall better result.

Thanks in advance for any practical advice. Wayne

welcome to buggynews, the engine is a cn250, honda parts will fit ie, coil, head, cylinder, intake, stator, etc

the gear box was designed to give a reverse and forward gear due to the scooter the engine came from does not have reverse and it had to be able to handle the power.

there are a few diff. versions of the gear box.

as far as mods go for hill climbing and acceleration you can change to a lighter roller or use sliders. change the main spring, and clutch springs.

you can change the variator and clutch also. snorkels dont work to well on some buggy's it resticks the air flow and makes the air tumble to much

I probably should move this to another thread for more detail discussion. Which one should I try?
