I found an unexpected type of nut that holds the starter clutch on the crankshaft of the KPX Xterro Instead of the normal type, it is a round nut with 4 notches keyed into it. Is a socket of this type easy to find??? Or is some other type of tool required to get this nut off correctly.
I suspect it's probably over tight like all the other nuts on these things.
The good news is that there is a washer behind it so it shouldn't be impossible to get off.
The nut and washer are gold in the following pictures. Behind the washer you can see a bearing and the starter clutch assembly.

You need a small spanner wrench. You could also try a brass drift. Just put it in a notch and tap on it pretty good with a hammer and see if it starts to come off. You could use a screwdriver or a punch if you don't have a drift, just be carefull not to gouge up the nut to bad.

Great! Thanks for the replies guys. Guess I need to go look for a spanner wrench. I'm not against getting the right tools for the job and hopefully by doing that I'll save the nut from bad damage.
The bastards and their strange nuts. I wasn't happy to see that when I got the right side of the case off.

Okay, apparantly I found out there are a zillion types of spanner wrenches out there so this isn't as easy as I thought it was going to be to find the right tool.
There are face spanners, double sided spanners, single sided spanners...
Knowing nothing about spanners, I'm wonder what will work best?
I also found spanner socket wrench used on some ball joints that looks EXACTLY like what I need, but it looks a little small. It's a 4 point spanner socket and it's the bottom picture
I'll attach some photos of different spanner types I've found and narrow it down from there.

Thanks James.
Those things are darn expensive... I think what I'm going to do is make my own socket spanner out of an impact socket I have that I never use. It appears that it will be just the right size and it's a deep socket so the crank shaft fits inside it just fine. I'm going to grind it away so that I am left with the 4 fingers in the right places to connect with the spanner nut. That will save me a lot of $$ and should be easy enough to do. The sockets exist out there but I bet not in the size I need, or not local, so I'd have to wait for weeks to get it. On top of that, probably a waste of money since they are not common tools.
