I know, I am starting to worry now. The fan is not turning, I did do the rag in the belt trick and it didn't turn. It did jump a bit, but never turn. I wonder if I need to buy a bigger air compressor air hose to feed into the impact wrench? Unbelievable!
I have the $30 dollar huskey belt wrench holding it now. This nut is costing me big.
The next thing that makes my stomach turn a bit is the nut on the face buster spring. I put the rubber strap around the clutch, and a pipe wrench on the nut, leaned on it with everything I had..... nothing. gasp!
I had major problems removing mine too. After breaking and having to replace the variator fan I decided to make a spanner wrench to fit the clutch and the variator for future use. It ain't pretty but works well. If you have a drill press or maybe a friend that works in a machine shop it's not very hard to make. I just used a piece of flat steel about 1/8" thick and drill/tapped holes to install bolts that would fit into the holes of the variator and clutch. Then drilled a big hole that my socket could pass through. I have attached some pics so you can see what I'm talking about. Sorry, I'm not much of a photographer . It was my girlfriends camera and much too complicated for me.
Oops, forgot to mention that I had to ream out the holes in the variator just a little so that standard 1/4 bolts would fit. I cut the heads off the bolts so that the smooth shoulder of the bolts would be what slipped inside the holes. I used 1/2 "stripper" bolts with the heads cut off for the clutch end.
I know it's probably overkill but I use a torque wrench on mine now. I set it to 50 ft.lb. I have had it apart and back together several times now with the redneck spanner wrench and have had no more problems.
Talonman, I did mine tonight and I had the same problem (250lbs impact wrench, sears) I think it laughed at it. I put wd40 and let it set for about an hour and then it did the job, they came right off! Maybe they put something on the threads at the factory!? What ever wd40 did it!
I also drove the bolt in (tightened) a little with the wd on it just to get it to brake free, not sure if it moved but maybe it helped to get the wd in the threads deeper. Not hard, just to move it a little, just a tap or two.
Are the face buster springs still hard to find, were should I go to get one? Stu must be out, who should I try next?

Hay Talonman, I boughy a 1-1/2" socket (10 bucks) to remove the clutch nut. Use your impact wrench.
Here is a good idea to remove the clutch nut. Take the clutch assembly off and lay it on the floor with the nun facing up. Put your feet on the outsides of the clutch to hold it down. Use your impact wrench to remove the nut, once the nut is off hold it down with your hands and slowly remove your feet and let off pressure with your hands. That way once the nut comes off it won't come flying at your face. _________________ Custom Buggy http://www.buggynews.com/topic13417.html

Hey Talonman, if you really want to live large, get a torque multiplier. They work on 2 inch nuts that hold escalators together, so they should shift your girly buggy nuts! Only problem is they are LARGE and EXPENSIVE.
Other way to impress your tool head mates is to get a 24volt rechargeable rattle gun. Bloody expensive as well, lucky I work for someone who buys me these toys.
There are some spray products around that are specifically for shifting frozen bolts/nuts, usually called release compound or some such. Heat works well too, ie oxy/acetelyne. Has anyone who has managed to remove these noticed a residue on the threads? We use three grades of loctite- a red one that can be removed with hand tools, a blue one that needs impact or torque multiplication, and a green one that requires destruction. Maybe the Chinese use this last one? _________________ If in trouble or in doubt, run around scream and shout.
The nut is still stuck after lots of WD-40. I am considering my bic lighter to add in the heat factor. I don't want to blow up with an open flame around my engine so I am not sure yet if I am going to go the flame route.
I have to say, the idea of burning this nut has a nice ring to it right about now!
