150 cc hammerhead gy6,starter appears to be turning/spinning but wont turn the engine over or even crank.I'm assumimg its probally the starter clutch assembly.I havent turned any tools on this one yet but just wondering if anyone has ever seen the gears on the starter itself fail?I'm hopeing its that easy atleast and not some internal mess. Are the starter clutches rebuidable or do you just by new ones, and how much?

thanks guys,filo

Pull the starter out and apply 12vdc to it if the stater spins, you will need to replace the stater clutch. To get to the clutch, you will need a flywheel puller since it is behind the stator. You will not have to split the case or remove the engine to replace it.

Buggy Depot sells the clutch for $45

you should hear the stater turn, if not check the battery for voltage, if voltage (12.7-13.5) its the starter, if you do hear it turning, take the starter out of the motor, and turn it over, if not turning still. you will have the internal gears off, broken teeth, or the nut that holds it all on has come off, but to get to it you haft to literally taake the hole motor apart

Word of caution before you open up the other side of the engine. Just because the starter turns, doesn't mean it is good. I went through nearly the identical situation a few weeks back. I did all kinds of things - the root cause, the starter was going bad. It was an easy fix but I made things harder than they needed to be.

Here's a link to the thread about my ordeal including video/audio of how my buggy sounded when it wouldn't start:

Good luck!

I just read your attached old posts and watched your video.Sounds to me like your engine is cranking just not turning over, mine isn't cranking AT ALL.I removed the starter and took it completely apart and put it back togeather. The starter is spinning when energized but the clutch inside the engine isn't engageing the crank. The only other possibilty I can think of is with the starter bolted back on the engine is it possible that I hear the starter turning but it isn't actually turning the female gear inside the engine while connected? As if the actuall gear on the starter is failing under load?I just dont see that happening so I'm opening it up tommorow. What do you think pghruby?????????????

So,broke down the engine today to get to the starter clutch ended up using a slide hammer to get the f@%kin flywheel off big pain in the rear end.Anyhow I'm attaching some pics of what I found. The second keyway on the crankshaft was trashed the little key simmilar to the timeing key was disintagrated and it looks like the keyway on the starter clutch itself has failed and the metal has cracked "see pictures".I ordered a new starter clutch from BigE"Mcdonugh powersports" even though he didnt have it for the cheapest price but i bug him all the time and he's really helpfull so he gets my buissness, plus he lives a few hundred miles away and the part will get here quick.Any how I was told I could get the keyway I'll be needing to install the starter clutch"the old one disintagrated see above paragraph" from lowes or home depot? My question,is the keyway peice i need here"see picture" pretty basic stuff I can get around town or do I have to order it.Another thing I noticed how much play should be in the chain in here because theres a good 1/4" of play but no way to tighten nor is there any tentioner in there.
