Hey guys, i need a new gy6 engine, i have a carter bro gx 125, i beleive it has a 150cc engine from the factory though, i would like to get the same exact engine and just swap them out, i dont mind swaping out my f/r gears either, but if i have to buy an engine with the gears then i will. Can anyone point me in the right directions?

Here are the links:

Short case 125cc GY6 - http://www.buggydepot.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&prod ucts_id=151

Howhit 150cc GY6 - http://www.buggydepot.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&prod ucts_id=149

Short case 150cc GY6 w/ internal reverse - http://www.buggydepot.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&prod ucts_id=285

Do you really need a new engine or could you just rebuild your current one?

I have the same question, and went to BD to look at their engines and didn't see one with add on reverse like I have on my HH150. I have to have mine rebuilt, but they only want to do the top end. I guess to do the timing chain he'll have to split the case? I guess what I want to know is would it be cheaper to buy a new engine than have mine rebuilt?

The BD engines run $300-$600. For $400, you can get a Howhit. To convert it to reverse, you would pull your existing output shaft and use it to attach your reverse assembly to the new engine. If you are doing the work yourself, you will save money by rebuilding your engine. If you plan on paying someone, you are better off buying a new engine and using the parts you want off your old one. If your current engine is damaged or you were thinking about the larger valve head, an engine swap starts to sound like a better deal.

Well i've tried everything I know and I still have no clue what the problem is, I think im better off with starting fresh with a new engine. I like the howhit engine, is it pretty much the same engine, hp, tq? im pretty sure I have a long case, but how can I tell? And if I do buy this engine, will changing the f/r gears be hard? I have replaced the cable becouse it broke one day, i saw all the gears in there, is it as simple as taking the whole unit off the shaft its on now, and placing it on the new engine? And one more question... how hard is the engine swap? I have an average ammout of expierence with these engines, I have replaced the cvt belt, re jetted and replaced rollers with sliders. All info helps, im just ready to get this thing running again, its been over a year since it has, and I really want to start fresh with a new engine!!!

This is one of my old topics, but it has a few pics of my kart and a few of my engine, if that helps any

The engine is pretty much the same as yours except it is a 150cc with the large valve head. All the buggies I have seen use the short case GY6 - Only large wheeled scooters use the long case. To move the reverse to a new Howhit follow these steps:

1. Drain the final transmission
2. Remove the exhaust
3. Remove the CVT cover
4. Remove the clutch assembly
5. Remove the reverse assembly
6. Remove the final transmission cover
7. Remove the final output shaft
8. Repeat steps 1-7 on the new engine
9. Install the old shaft in the new engine
10. Reassemble and fill the transmission

Can you tell from the pics at the link if i have a short or long case? Ill practice thoes steps on my old engine before i order a new one. So that howhit on bd would be a good choice?
Do you have any expierence on swaping the engine?
