Battery issues on a Kinroad 250

I just got a Kinroad 250. The battery doesn't seem to charge. I have to use a trickle charger on it every time, which shouldn't be (I think) for a brand new buggy.

Do people generally throw out the battery that comes from China and use another? I'd hate to blow $60 on a battery if I didn't have to.

How can I tell if the alternator is the problem?

with the buggy on jack stands, take a volt meter and hook it to the battery, crank the buggy and note the voltage, rev the buggy up some and not the voltage.

with the engine rpm up you should see around 14 volts.
