Hi all,

our 150 buggy drive belt lets go after only 4 hours use. The buggy has about 800 miles on it (total)- and all seemed well. A couple of weeks ago the first belt let go; the second and third both lasted about 4 hours before breaking. The cord part of the belt is wrapped around the clutch spring, and the rubber is in two or three inch sections everywhere else.

Any ideas as to what could be going on?

All help much appreciated!

couple of things first make sure your getting good belts for replacment. second make sure you have the vents cleaned out for the cvt cover. also make sure you get all the belts and peices out from around the shafts. if you dont the peices wont be able to move as they are suposed to and cause a bind.

like what oz said, pull the variator out, pull the clutch out and remove the main spring. clean all the debris from them and make sure the rollers are in the correct postion

when replacing the belt are you leaving the fan off the variator and putting the belt on the shaft first

After replacing the belt prop up the machine and with the CVT cover off run it for a short time. Check that the belt runs smoothly in the grooves. Check alignment aslo. Make sure the the variator and the clutch are not off set. This could be caused by debris(as offered above) or rollers that are offtrack. That creates friction and will cause the belt to disintegrate

i just thought i would add this to.look at your cvt cover on bottom and see if the belt is rubbing the cover.on my cvt cover i notice that the belt will rub it a little at bolt hole for the cover, the first bolt hole past the clutch on bottom.
i think a little belt stretch and a couple other theory's i have is whats causing this for me,not sure though.i do keep an eye on it so won't ware any sharp grooves in it.

Hi all,

thanks for the suggestions. When each belt has broken, I have removed all the debris with compressed air. I hav removed the variator, put the rollers in, placed the belt just ino the clutch groove, and slipped the belt over the variator spindle.

I then put the variator fan disk on and impact-wrench te spndle nut on. I then test run the assembly, and all looks good.

the CVT case had some wear marks on it, which I assumed was due to the clutch bell coming loose when that failed at 400 lies. I ground out the maks and polished the case, just in case the belt was rubbing.

I'm running out of ideas on this one. Maybe I should replace the belt, clutch and variators!

Keep te ideas coming please guys! I'd be especially grateful to hear from anyone else who has had this problem.

may i ask what brand belt you are running?
my buggy came with the 743-20-30 bando i had good luck with it only reason i changed was a little stretch and normal ware on sides, starting to cup.
when i replaced belt and ordered a new belt and got a zhuping brand 743-20- 30 i never broke it i caught it in time but it was starting to separate after a couple of months.
then went to gates powerlink 743-20-30 and its a good belt and been doing a fine job.
i got to be honest i just don't care for the zhuping belt didn't hold up well for me and my riding style hasn't changed.
could there be a chance that the belt is not holding up to your riding style.

Thanks!

The belt I am running are stock Chinese replacements. I cant remember the name. The string in the belts seems flimsy- just a basic nylon string, from what I can see.

Am I correct in thinking that these belts are difficult to install incorrectly? The clutch and variator can only fit one way, and so I cant see how I could fit the belts wrong.

Any idea where I can get a GAtes belt in the UK? Does anyone have a manufacturers telephone number? It did'nt come up on Google.

Thanks again,
