The manual states SAE 140. Would the Royal Purple 75w140 or 85w140 work or does it have to be SAE140 only?

Not sure of the answer, but there was a thread on here talking about "engine and gear oil?" Maybe try to look for it in the mean time.

Yeah I searched and found a few threads. I am fairly sure 75w140 would be ok BUT I just want to be sure since the manual just says 140. Straight 140 sounds way to thick.
