I had the opportunity to get a feel for some of the Hammerhead products while visiting a dealer in Northern Utah over the weekend.

I was particularly interested in learning more about the 400. There was not much room to really open it up as I was only driving around a small parking lot. I liked the power and you could actually do a turn on pavement in 3rd gear so it lugged well.

The only thing that I did not care for was the shifting. I do not know if it was the machine that I drove or if the shifting is like this in all the Yamabuggy-type machines. I seemed to lose a lot of momentum until the rpms dropped low enough to shift then it would go into gear.

Glade

I don't think parts for the motor and tranny will be an issue.
The motor and tranny are yamaha as far as I can see, any Yamaha dealer will have parts. Do like I did, go to https://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/myyamaha/login/L3Nwb3J0L215eWFtYWhhL2hvbWUuYXNweA==/sta rthere.aspx create a new account, login and add a new vehicle, 2006 Big Bear 400 4x4, you will need to make up a VIN #, I did XXXX and it worked. There you can view an owners manual, and buy a parts and service manual.
I haven't had to get on the inside of my HH400 motor and order parts yet but the oil filter part number for the Big Bear works.
P.S. I think the differenatal is the same as Big Bear also, I'm just going by the looks only on this.

As for the slipping of the clutch...it is out of adjustment. They shouldn't slip. There is an easy jam nut and screw adjustment on the drivers side of the motor to adjust the clutch. The dealer and I found this out the hard way. The only HH400 he had and the only one I had test drove had this same issue, where it would not catch the next gear untill lower RPM. I ask about it and was informed that was normal. This was his first HH400 that he had ever seen so....I asked him to order one for me and I will pick which one I liked best. The newer one didn't have this problem, delear called HH and instruted how to adjust clutch on the first one, problem fixed. I bought the second one.

when i ordered mine, i gave wes and garret a call at Hammerhead(TJ). they both assured me that parts would be available for a long time. warranty still covered if it needed anything. it is a yamaha engine/tranny. all big bear parts fit it. just wish i new what jet to put in the carb. i'm putting a D&D pipe on it. anyone with any suggestions? i believe stock jet is a 124.

eric, i'm no mechanic by any means, Rolling Eyes , but what do you mean by raising the needle? you mean going with a larger jet?

I think it has a slide carb on it, so you unscrew the top where the throttle cable goes in, remove the tiny clip from around the needle, and reposition it 1-2 notches further up.

that puts the needle not so far down in the jet, which lets more fuel in
