| < Engine Clinic - Mini Off Road Buggy ~ HELP!!! Crankcase full of gas... |

Hey group! I have a kinroad sahara 250 that I bought for my daughter a couple of years ago. The cart sat for a few months, and when I tried to start it, I noticed gas dripping out of the air cleaner cover. After a little tinkering, I unscrewed the oil fill cap, and at least a half gallon of gas/oil gushed out. Does this sound like stuck float in carb? I'm pretty bummed...the cart has always started well. What do I need to do now? Thanks in advance for any help...

The vacuum operated fuel petcock has probably gone bad.
It's on the bottom of the gas tank. It is only supposed to allow gas to flow when the engine is being cranked or running. If the rubber diaphram in the petcock goes bad, it can leak gas out into the vacuum line which is connected to the intake manifold. Gas will leak into the cylinder and eventually fill up the crankcase.

That happened to mine a while back, vapor lock with my Makuni carb. Drain all of it out by removing the oil drain screw. Fill it up with oil and start it. Let it run for a few seconds and repeat the process a few times letting it run a little longer each time. Then you should be all set.

Thanks for the responses. I drained the crankcase...man, I think it was completely full!! I pulled the two hoses off the fuel valve thingy on the bottom of the fuel tank and added some fuel. There is no gas leaking from either port, so hopefully the petcock assembly is ok.
Tried to start it after adding oil to crankcase, and the starter would just barely turn for a second or two, so I pulled the battery and charged it for a while. Guess what???? Starter still barely turns. I can hear the solenoid clicking like crazy. I pulled the starter and hooked it directly to the battery...it wont turn at all. I can feel it attempt to turn, but no good. I can turn it by hand, and it has resistance, but it actually feels like its okay mechanically, but a kinda think that the gas in the crankcase was so high that it may have seeped into the starter and goofed the internals. Any ideas? Where in the world can I get a starter for this thing? It doesn't have a single number anywhere on it.....

Pull the spark plug and turn it over a few times.
But be careful......I've had em shoot gas out the plug hole all over the place. I've seen good petcocks do that from time to time. I think sometimes the piston may stop in just the right spot, and still be pulling a tiny bit of vacuum....just enough to cause it to drip. I've had some do this and they were fine after changing the oil and blowing out the cylinder.

I can't even turn it over now...I think my starter is fried. If I hook the starter straight to the battery, it should spin up right away shouldn't it? I can feel it kinda 'click' inside, but it wont turn. My battery shows 12v, so I think its okay...unless it cant handle the load of the starter. I guess I'll have to see if autozone can test either of them. I think I'm in the market for a starter. Ric, any leads? Oh yeah, thanks for the advice...I'll pull the plug 2morrow.

pull the plug before you take it apart. If the cylinder is full of fuel and you keep trying to force it you will mess up the internals on the engine.

I just got a load of starters in. Unfortunately the Chinese company didn't individually box em....they just threw all 100 of them in a big box. The terminals on most got bent and broke the plastic insulators around the terminal. I'm selling em for $10 ea with $7 shipping. They work fine.

Hey Ric, that sounds awesome. I can tell that the terminal point on mine is different than that...which shouldn't be a big deal, but if at all possible, could you post a pic of the complete starter? I really need to know if the mounting points are the same. Also, mine is a 9 spline, what are the ones you have? Thanks a million.
