Hi,
I'm new to this site, and it certainly looks like the place to be for information on karts and buggy's! I've had off road go karts - buggy's for a long time (mostly for my kids) but only recently became aware of this site.
We currently have a Baja Motorsports Dune 150 and an older Carter Bro's machine, although I can't remember the model number right now. It is a two seater with a 9hp Techumseh on it, if that helps.
Now to the question (I did do a search on this, but wasn't able to find anything). The Dune 150 is giving me fits. It was fine for a long time and then suddenly started having carb problems. What it was doing was overflowing the float bowl and draining out the bowl vent. I took the carb off multiple times and cleaned it, none of which solved the problem. I was about to take it off again and ran into a good deal on a new carb, so I bought that. At this point I also added an inline fuel filter because the intank filter looked to be damaged. It ran fine for a few days and then started doing the exact same thing as the old carb. Am I correct that the only thing that could cause this is the needle not closing fully?
Is this a decent carb, or are there better ones to use?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Jim
welcome to buggynews, the cv carb is a pretty good carb, have you taken the filter out of the tank? sometimes dirt and stuff can get in the tank and go thru to the carb.
check the needle and see if its works smooth. also remove the gas line from the vacumn fuel valve on the bottom of the tank. if fuel runs out then you need to replace it with a new one or change it over to a barb fitting and a manual shut off valve. _________________ Blade buggies,Carter buggy's Atv's, parts and repairs. accessories for all makes.

Thanks for the information. I did remove the intank filter, and the tank outlet already has a shutoff valve on it. I'm not sure what you mean by vacuum valve. Would I have that if I had a shutoff valve?
No, if you have a manual shut off, then you won't have a vacuum one.
a hole in the float will cause the same problem. _________________ Steele's Powersports

I know anything is possible, but how likely would it be for the new carb, that has been on the car for only a couple days, to display the exact same symptoms as the old carb?
I do know that the float in the old carb is fine. In fact everything I could see looks fine, but yet it floods. I even did a bench test on it, and it worked! Put it on the engine and it overflows. It's really strange.
I did on the first carb. There seems to be a very fine line between flooding and starving with that carb, or at least that seemed like what it was. But I never was able to correct the problem that way.
The new carb has only been on the kart a couple days. Like I said, it was working perfectly for a while and then just suddenly went bad. I haven't yet had time to look at it, but my son is taking it off today and I'll check it out over the weekend. Is there any other way for fuel to come out the bowl vent other than the needle not seating or hte float being set too high or having a hole in it? All these things always look fine when I check them out, and then it does the same thing after I put it back on the engine.
One thing I'll mention in case it's significant. In both cases the kart was okay until I drove it. Not sure why. I do drive it harder than my kids. Could that have anything to do with it?

bravenrace yes you are wright on the very fine line of setting the float level especially if you don't have a float guage been down that road either had it set to low the pilot jet wouldn't pick up the gas or to high flooding it.
how has the buggy been starting??
i know this is going to sound strange but have you adjusted the valves i have had some strange things happen when my valves are way out of adjustment, one not shutting or opening all the way things like that.
just a thought

The valves are in adjustment. It was starting fine before the float bowl flooded. It won't start at all when it is. I tried draining it with the tank valve shut, then opening the valve and starting it. It started fine, but then started running poorly and leaking out the bowl vent within 10-15 seconds after starting it.
