new to the buggy world. broke the chain on the new buggy at coos bay this weekend(second time out!?!) NEED TO KNOW WHAT CHAIN I CAN i can replace with. it has (had) a dual row with the two connected to make one...which means they still break together. will a regular 520 chain work? and has anyone swithed the hubs...what works? i know that there must be a way to change to a more common 4?110mm pattern. i need paddles bad! but dont want to spend 400 to be able to swith back and forth.
If you measure the current bolt pattern on your buggy, you will find it will cross over to an ATV brand or make. Once you know this, it is much easier finding new or used wheels.
Most of the double roller chains can be replaced with a 530 single roller chain using the existing sprockets, but you will find that running in sand will eventually require you to gear down with a larger sprocket. Plus, you will not stress the final transmission and CVT as much with the lower gearing.
It took two trips to the sand to figure out what my buggy needed to work well and not break down. On the third trip we were expecting the worst but instead had a great time.
My Yerf-Dog 150 runs a 13t engine and 39t axle sprocket with 530H chain. It is quite happy spinning the rear 22" tires with the 4 year old stock clutch.
If you are running a 150cc buggy, I don't think it produces enough horsepower for the weight to use paddles efficiently. My ProWedge II's allow enough slip in the sand to keep the RPMs up yet are not so aggressive they will dig holes in one spot when they spin. I feel the same way about front tires: These buggies do not have enough power to keep the front end unloaded and use skinny rail tires. I have fat large diameter front tires that provide good flotation. If you have seen the converted buses with large aircraft tires running the tours, this was my inspiration.
