Reverse gear broke, not while I was riding it, and there is oil all over the top of the gear box. It runs fine in forward but switch to R and nothing; no clunk, no grinding (neutral); back to F and runs fine. The driver mentioned getting stuck in some water and may have been slamming it back and forth from F to R. Is this (hopefully) just a broke cable or do we have some catastrophic failure? The oil on top makes me think the second option. What can I check for to see if it is roached or just wildly out of adjustment. Any help would be good, I have 1 month left on my ext. warranty but they only seem to recommend motorcycle repair shops that have never seen a go kart Mad

I suspect the cable needs to be adjusted. If it was broken you wouldn't go into "neutral". There is no oil in the reverse gear box, at least there isn't if it's an external gearbox. It's packed with grease. Your cable adjustment is either at the shift lever, at the box, or in some cases both. You adjust it like you would a hand brake on a bicycle. With the lever in the forward position turn the adjusting ferrule(?) out a couple of turns, start the engine and try the reverse lever. With mine it's easier to shift if I raise the engine rpm slowly to start clutch engagement as I pull the lever. You may have to adjust a couple of times to get it. If it grinds just back the screw out a little more. Adjust out till the grind stops plus a couple. If you go to far out you won't be able to pull the handle up far enough to lock into reverse, or when you release the handle you'll have teh opposit problem you have now. No forward gear, or stuck in neutral, or just grinding. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip, maybe if its just an adjustment I can do it myself. The oil is what worried me the most, he said he got it into some deep (12") water and I've never noticed oil on the outside before? Could that be some motor oil , it is near what appears to be an overflow hose...

It could be coming out of the vent hose. I'd clean it off and see if it comes back. 12" of water should be ok. to be safe pull the dipstick. If the oil looks like chocolate milk there is water in it. change it. can you post a picture of where the oil is?

im4seven is on the right track regarding this. I'd suggest to just change the oil (never hurts) and pack your gearbox with a really good high quality (can't stress it enough) grease. Look at your owners manual for directions on how to install the grease. My Dazon has a grease fitting on the side of the gearbox to use a greasegun. My Talon just had a bolt you removed to add grease. Adjust your cable like im4seven suggest. Be sure to lubricate your cable too with motorcycle cable lube.
