Last Friday I was at the local Carter buggy dealer and noticed the stock exhaust on the Carter is much more open than many of the other 150cc buggies. Is this new to Carter or did I just miss it in the past?

That looks exactly like the stock exhaust that was on my 06 Carter Talon. It's not very open. It's pretty typical of stock exhaust. I didn't open mine up (replaced it with an Eastside pipe), but I believe others have and it's like a maze of restriction inside there.

I don't know what is inside, but it is twice the size of the opening on the Yerf-Dog, Toberlin, and Baja stock exhausts.

Yep there is a maze of baffles going on in there. I found that out myself when gutting my old Talon exhaust.

Is true Pghruby, muffler looks good; even cool chrome sheild, but stock was incredibly restrictive. Our's the Guts fell apart !! Internally theres a m/x style packing heat sheild held in place w/steel mesh (the quality of tin foil), & 1 very restrictive flat plate baffle w/3 (aprox) 5/8 holes... & another baffle (which ended up breaking loose & plugging exh flow --- originally hard to figure out problem, as it would only occationally do this @ sustained high revs)... Oh & the nice looking 1 1/2 or 1 1/4 (I think) header reduces itself at the stinger inside the muffler by 50% or so !!! The end cap opening size is... twice exhaust flow reality !!
This got the Farmer style gutting... welded back in the three hole baffle after opening up flow... still looks stock w/end cap on; & heavy duty (mesh spark arrester style) screen - ready to install when needed (like--Moses Lake Memorial Day Bash) Very Happy Very Happy .Shocked well I almost got the spark arrester part designed

The exhaust on my Talon also fell apart inside and then the baffle was plugging it up. It's amazing how cheap some of the parts can be on these things. Atleast it has a well built frame.

Thanks guys - It was one of those small details I never noticed on the Carter.

Listening to you guys, It sounds like my original Yerf exhaust wasn't that bad (at least it never fell apart or cracked). My drilled baffle twister exhaust has been working well and hasn't exhibited the problems others have had with loose hardware. I think I am at good balance between noise and back pressure although a tunable exhaust seems like the best way to go.
