I have a baja 65 go kart in for repair, they use a trailing arm with that type of axle. I will post a picture of it. thought it is a good idea.

The axles are 1" with a 1/4" key way. They should hold up just fine. I will also have to make a new header. The original one will be in the way of the shock. No bid now that I have a bender. Very Happy

150cc scooter headers run on the other side. You may be able to buy one of those instead of making a custom one. It would be easier to change parts in the future if you do not have to build them each time...
