Has anyone out there had a buggy (150 or 250) registered in Alabama. The DMV site is unclear. I know they do not register ATVs.
The buggys meet all the legal requirements (if I add DOT tires).
Somebody will probably tell me to call my county DMV, however, if I do not want to ask the question and be told NO. When if I do not ask the question I could just walk into the DMV and get a Tag.
Not essential that I can ride on the road, it would just save me having to load on the trailer all the time and could be fun in the summer.

i live out in etowah co. alabama and there is all backroads here. i just ride mine anyways. cops have passed me several times. i was told that a buggy could not be registered when i was thinking the same thing about a tag. reason it can't be registered is because there is no vin number to register. well i was cleaning my kinroad up a few days ago and noticed there is a vin number stamped in the frame on the back just above the engine.

Neil,

I live in Birmingham. You sure can get a tag for your buggy here. You must have hi & low beam headlights, turn signal indicators, brake lights & tail lights & a horn. There is still some debate over a windshield. I've seen a buggy with a tag at "Playing in the Dirt" an offroad shop here in Shelby County. I called the DMV & gave them my 17 digit VIN number & they said I could register the vehicle & get a tag for it. Since my 250 only does around 30MPH, I obviously can't take it on 65, but no problem running to the grocery store etc.

I even called my insurance compnay and asked about getting a quote on the minimum required by AL law. I was quoted $123 every 6 months.

As soon as I get my buggy running again, it will be my primary mode of transportation. Especially in light of gas prices, gas mileage etc. Not to mention how much fun it will be watching heads turn as I cruise on down the road!

Shjm,
Thanks for your reply. That is what I was looking for. I really didn't want to go and ask the wrong question at the Shelby DMV. I did not notice the tag at Playin in the dirt, nor did I ask them the question. To apply for your tag did you have get an inspection etc? Or just appear with your docs?
Where do you ride - power/gas line trails? What are you riding, any problems on the hills?

Why would you want to drive these on the street? They to me would be more dangerous than a motorcycle. The government will license anything to make a Tax dollar.I do agree they would get better gas mileage.James

here in alabama there are alot of backroads. so to get to the trails, hills, and mud holes you must drive to them. 4wheelers are all the time on the road although i got stopped once on a 4wheeler they said i had to stay in the ditch. the speed limit is only 45 on the backroads at the most. so to get from point A to point B legally would be kinda nice

haha i agree on the main highways. here i ride on the other side of the ditch until i get to the backroads then ill ride on the road. no large trucks allowed on backroads unless they are bringing some farm equipment then they only go like 25

I haven't applied for my tag yet. I've only had her back a couple of weeks and haven't done the work I was told would be required as yet.

I ride around my neighborhood (private roads) and the power lines and trails in back of our neighborhood. I live in the Greystone area backing up to CR 41.
