I have SandSpyder 650 that just punctured a sidewall and am looking at stronger taller front tires for my 12x7 rims. I'd like to go with 27x9-12 with a 4 or 6 ply rating that will used 60% trail and 40% sand.

1. What front tires do others run?
2. Where are you getting your tires?
3. Any experiences with radials?

My bro-in-law has Maxxis Big Horns on the rear of his and loves them....He's still contemplating what to do for fronts...Maybe the same but I think something like the Goodyear Rawhide MT/R would be a good one too....

I saw those Maxxis radial tires along with Maxxis bias ply version (Light Foot). I wonder if radials dig too much since they are stiffer? They also seem to be heavier which is not desirable up front...

I am considering these bias ply tires:

ITP Mud Lite XL
Kenda Bear Claw
Kenda Bear Claw EX
Maxxis Light Foot

And possibly these radials:

Good Year RawHide MT/R
ITP Mud Lite XTR
Kenda K537 HD Side-By-Side Bounty Hunter Radial
Maxxis Big Horn

I run the 26" ITP Holeshot ATR. They work pretty well for me on the desert hardpack and sandy washes. They are also fairly light for their size. IMO...they are worth a look. They track very well in the loose stuff.

I like those tires, but was hoping to go with a 27" tall size so the front rolls over things easier while biasing more weight to the rear 25" tires. I do not plan on going taller in the rear since I like torque over speed. The light weight is tempting though...

I run Interco SwampLites on two of my buggies. They are 6-ply. They are heavier than MudLites, but I love them. They give me exceptional traction in hard pack, loose pack, and mud. I bought mine through 4atvtires.com in Kentucky. I have had excellent customer service with them. I received both sets within 3 days of ordering.

I believe that the following tires will give you the best turning ability and are closest to your sizing wants..:

Maxxis Big Horn Radial 27" tall 9" wide
ITP Holeshot ATR 26" tall 8" wide
Goodyear Rawhide MT/R 26" tall 8" wide

My thinking on this is you need a narrower tire up front for the buggy to dig in and get good "grip" in the dirt.....You don't need/want big "open" tread patterns like the Mud Lite, Kenda, or Light Foot, I believe these styles are more for the front of 4 wheel drive ATV's and lessen the turning ability of the buggy....

Just my 2.5 cents worth on this.... Very Happy

Also, I don't think the "undriven" rotational weight of the front tires is as detrimental for a 2wd as opposed to "powered" rotational weight if it were 4wd....

I hope that makes sense and is correct...

Unsprung weight is always an issue to me, yet I need something better than the stock 2-ply skin that was on the front due to my trail riding. I like keeping that front end light and responsive.

Ideally, I want a tall thin tire with a centerline of tread for directional control and some side lugs for crawling. However once you get into the 26" and 27" front tires, it seems like everything is for 4x4 application. I know everyone has a different riding styles and environments, but I do appreciate the feedback on what has worked for you - Please keep it coming. I hope to make my decision this weekend and get my ride back in action (good thing I have a spare buggy to feed my addiction).

You can't go wrong with the Maxxis Bighorns. I've had them almost a year now and have put them through pretty much every terrain possible. From airing them down to almost zero psi in the sand to up to 10 psi on some long road trips with big massive rocky hill climbs. There isn't much they coudn't handle. Also the "6 ply radials" stay straight and smooth for higher speeds.
