Hello I'm totally new to the 150cc mini buggy. Got one for kids and I. It is a Cyclone 150cc (probably a knockoff brand). Any very good running buggy but has ABSOLUTLEY no bottom end power!! AT ALL. real slow taking off. and wont go up ANY type of hill if not at meduim to full speed. Buggy has fairly good topend maybe 35mph. The guy i bought it from gave me about 6 new belts with it, and said the belt on it is the wrong one. that is why it aint so fast. But I know better. Belt dont have anything to do with bottom end torque. (does it)? So, is my buggy broke or something major wrong? I know someone who has another brand . slightly smaller buggy than mine , but is a 150cc and his spins tires and is good from the start. Please help me with what I need to do? thank you

the belt has everything to do with your speed. if it is to big then you are taking off in a higher part of the pulley witch is like a higher gear and the same goes for the thickness of the belt.

You probable just need to do the basic mods, rollers, torque spring, air filter, and a rejet.

thank you both. the man owned a parts place . thats why i have so many extra belts. But if I am running the wrong size belt would it still run? am i doing any damage to engine or transmission? he said someone told him to run this other belt for his smaller kids to keep it slower. is it hard to change the belt? (i am mechanically inclined automotivly).

It is not so hard to change the belt. If you want the buggy to perform and it has too large a belt then it needs changed out. You will need to remove the CVT cover....there should be about 8-10 bolts around the perimeter of the CVT cover. To install the proper size belt the outer portion of the variator(with fans) should be removed. Do not try to force a smaller belt on over the edges of the pulleys..it will be too hard.

As stated above if the belt is too large then you are starting out in high gear. That is why you can acheive full top speed but have no accerlation response.

No you will not notice a distinct shift. That is what is so nice about these automatic CVT transmissions. They are smooth.

Your exhaust will likely be attach to the old kick start bracket on the side of the CVT cover. This will need to be removed.

The type of tranny that is in these buggies is called a CVT (Constantly Variable Transmision). Think of two adjustable pulley diameters connected by a belt. These adjustable pulleys look like cones that can be sqeezed together or seperated to make the belt ride at different diameters. If the belt is too long, it will ride higher on the cone limiting the range of the CVT.

You will need to remove the exhaust to get to the CVT cover. Once the cover is off, you will need an inpact wrench to remove the the finned pulley. The other side of this pulley is the variator. The variator has six rolls behind it held by a plate. Stock rollers are about 13-15g each and while good for a scooter are too heavy for buggy applications. Most of the people replace the stock rollers with 10g rollers or 12g sliders. to allow the the engine to rev higher before going in higher gear.

The other side of the CVT is the clutch and torque spring. I'll continue only if you ask...

check this out, hoepfully it will help:

http://www.northeastbuggy.com/soaclan-about94.html

That is my guide to chaning the rollers and stuff... I believe the exhaust is a 15mm bolt into the CVT cover
The exhaust is also held on with 2 10mm nuts on teh front of the motor, behind your seats... Those 2 nuts are pretty long acorn style, but be careful when removing, as there is a small donut gasket there as well.

The bolts holding the CVT cover on the motor are all 8mm You have to remove all of them! lol

Then you have to remove the front fan. That fan is part of the VARIATOR... the variator is 1 sides of a pulley, and a center shaft. One side of the pulley is the fan, the other side is the body that contains the roller weights we are all talking about. Just changing to the correct belt will increase your power to it's stock performance level, but if you wnat to bump it another notch, then swap out your rollers to a ligher weight (11-9 gram) and that will wake that buggy up!!!

I am almost certain that nut holing the fan on is 17 or 18mm... You will NEED an impact wrench to remove and re-install it later on... There is a washer behind the nut as well, dont forget it!!!

Good luck!!!
