TurboDude;
Quote:
the early 05's 650 did have a different geared trans than the 07 +. lower 1-3 gear
3:1 ratio ?? this is pretty extreme (where would that put aprox. top speed ?? could I get my hands on 05 trans - if it lowers all gears ?? ) or U mean only lowered 1st thru 3rd gear ??... R there any other options Im missing ?? ??

I know theres at least one other 650 owner thats very interested in gearing down... So would like to hear input/advice about slowing this rig down (on the forum, for now, as Im a business owner also, w/litl spare daylite time).
Eastern Wa. has some great open spaces (just not alot of Wide - Open Spaces) may even be interested in turbo purchase in near future, but not unless I can gear this thing down. Have zero interest in making it go faster than it already goes... but increased Hp on geared down 650, would be the ultimate !!!

Guys what do U think on tire size swaps, anybody running 23" sand paddles (or 24"), & can speak to speed diff compared to 25" ?? Im stalling out here... 4th gear, on 90% of our riding is unusable... Thanks in advance, Jeff

I have 23" paddles that not mounted on rims yet. I have a couple of other commitments before I devote more time to the buggies. Either way, I will not be able to test the paddles until the NW Buggy Bash in May. Since 25" tires are stock on 2007 models, every 1" reduction in tire size gives us a 4% lower gear ratio but also 1/2" less rear clearance. According to Joyner the 2008's now have 27" stock tires, so the gearing is 8% higher than our 2007's.

The differential output shafts are different between the SandSpider and Commando, but the clutch is identical and there are only two different parts in the transmission:

The First Shaft Assembly - Commando 1701131 - SandSpider 1701130

Shift Lever for First and Second Gears - Commando 1702014 - SandSpider 1702017

Can Joyner let us know what is different about these parts and are they interchangeable?

Joyner updated their manuals on the website. The old Commando manual made it look like a 4x2. Was this ever the case?

Once I have time to compare new editions, I will again figure out which parts are different. I am finding considerable inaccuracies in the parts manuals and pricing engine (thankfully DoonRunr has been patient with me). The Air Force used to pay me extra for finding and fixing errant documentation - I need to get Joyner on this program.

Pghruby; good to see U.

Yea I know, & U aint even used em... U should have left them w/me on Easter ride (I'd of tryed em out 4 U), L.Schab boys owe me big after my last tractor incident & (almost) repair...

The paddles in the sand would not be a very accurate accessment to compare to mine (stock 25"), but straight up, head to head, on hard pack 1/4 drag, might give me a feel for the speed diff w/23" compared to 25".

Pghruby; consider yourself to have been Officially Challenged... at Mem. Day @ Moses Lake. in all fairness to your (Mod. challenged, slower Sand Spider), we could do a best out of 3 runs, maybe 1 run on 1/4 mi.; 1 run on shorter 1/8 mi. & lay out a course thru the toollies around the lake bottoms ?? You game ?? Any other takers ??
Jeff

You know I prefer the crawl over the sprint. Remember the hill on that ride where De4Lee got a free ride home? If I could drop in a diesel tractor engine with double ganged 2:1 transfer cases into the Joyner, I would be following the mountain goats.

You will have to wait to see Physikal's pictures of the Yerf in action (water crossings, off camber slopes and rock climbing). He did miss photographing me going vertical on couple of occasions. Stupid_Kracker needed a winch to climb a tree - The Yerf had no problem driving straight up one.

Yes; is true your Yerf is the King of Crawl (I mean Torque)...

But wait, you declining my Challenge ?? Race (for pink slip) would merely be for research purposes... You Know ; Adrenelin, produced from Speed leads to healther, longer Life span, & tastes better than spinach.

Mine is 05 and doesnt have digital dash. The only thing wrong with the gearing on the 05 is fourth gear is too tall. It is only usefull for top speed on flat or downhill runs. Unless you have a turbo and then there is enough power to make use of it. Mine will do almost 60 in third gear though so when off roading it is like you have a three speed instead of a four speed. I have never felt that first gear needed to be lower as some have expressed, but maybe that is because of the type of driving we do.

My understanding is that nothing has changed. The gears are still the same. Maybe one of the Joyner Dealers on this sight knows more.
