Hoping to find out if anyone knows of an after market starter available for the 800cc engine.
I tried the local PepBoys to see if an 88 Chevy Sprint would work but the Bosh part number they pulled did'nt seem like it would work.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The 1987 Sprint should fit. If you don't trust it try awesomebuggy.com they have them in stock.

Hey Joe , What kink of problems are you having ? I have worked on my fair share of the 800 start problems and most of the time it is not the starter rather low voltage to the start side of the solenoid. Even some 07' models are still having this problem.
The fix is to find the hot wire feeding the start switch and rewire it to the hot side of your winch control . The winch control has a much bigger wire and thus will carry much higher amperage and will fix the problem of a dead starter. Use your voltage meter and make sure your hooking it up correctly. I would tell you the wire colors but every model seems to be different!!

Hmmmm it just so happens that I am having the same problems.
I removed the starter, and took it to autozone. They checked it out and said both the starter and celenoid (sp?) were fine.
The battery is good, and there is pull on the system when the ignition is turned...lights and wench work fine.
I'll have to check out WC's idea
Thanks
Chris

Chris I bet I have fixed ten buggys with this problem and it cures them all. The power wire that runs from the battery side of the starter to the ignition switch is like 16 gauge , Way too small for the amperage needed.
Hope it works for you..

Not sure what month last year but that definetly works go 12 gauge and add a larger or second battery. This engine needs 12.5volts to turn over, anything less may be an issue.

Thanks for the tips Jojano and WestCoast.
Have already replace the thin "yellow/green" wire with a much thicker one. It was working great for a while. Then one day the starter would click but not turn over.
Decided to replaced my starter with one from my brother's GK-32 after being unsuccessfull at the local PepBoys...it turned over right away.
Wanting to start the damb thing I decided to drop the defective unit on the garage floor a couple of times. Reinstalled it and sure enough it started.
Don't know how long it will last but at least I can move it around untill I get a new one. Who would have thought a starter could run close to $150.
Thanks again for your help...Don't know what I'd do with out this resource.

Ok...
I am kind of lost when it comes to the electrical system...understand theory but not practice
It sound like I need to either unplug the hot wire at ignition and splice in a line to the hot wire on the winch.
or
run a thicker wire from battery to ignition
Right....?
Do I need to do anything from the ignition to the starter???
Thanks for the help.

Hey Chris,
My fix is to abandon the power wire from the battery side of the solenoid to the ignition switch, get the ignition switch power from the hot side of the winch control. The reason I do it that way is you dont need to tear the whole loom apart to run a bigger wire, you only need to go a foot to the winch control.
The buggies I have worked on have a good wire from the switch to the start side of the solenoid, no problems there.
I havent hade any problems with the main battery cable but it sounds like Joe did and bigger wire sure cant hurt.
