This has been posted elsewhere and it bears repeating in a more general-interest topic:
Quote:

7. Bolts: Most Chinese sandrail and go-kart manufacturers use inferior grade bolts and that includes the bolts used for the roll cages. All bolts should be at least Grade 8 or higher. Metric Bolts metric scale starts at 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9. It is on the head of bolt. Go to this website for Metric Bolt Strength: http://euler9.tripod.com/bolt-database/22.html
It would be advisable to replace all bolts on any Chinese Sandail or go-kart if you buy one. Make sure the bolts you replace have enough thread engagement. Use Loc-tite on all bolts including the ones you did not replace.

That link does indeed take you to a site with lots of specs on metric fasteners but I think most people familiar with the SAE grade ratings would find a conversion table more helpful so here is the #2 Google hit:

http://www.lelandpowell.com/metric.htm

I have read many posts in the past from people mistaking the "8.8" on a metric bolt as meaning grade 8. Not true. Hope this clears up some common misunderstandings about metric grade numbers.

I think you've confused me.

On the Leland Powell site you recommend, they say the 8.8 on the head DOES mean grade 8.

your confused. LOL sorry

this is what it means in a nutshell
no markings on the head of the bolt is a grade 2 for both metric and english fastners.
8.8 or 3 lines on the head is a grade 5 fastner
10.9 or 6 lines on the head is a grade 8 fastener

One of us is reading it wrong. Why does it say under the 8.8 bolt head that it is grade 8.8?

A Metric Grade 8.8 Bolt is equivalent to a Standard Grade 5 Bolt

See the left column is METRIC and the right COLUMN is INCH.

Got it now?
