Spent this holiday weekend at Pismo Beach riding the dunes with the family. First trip for the Hammerhead after my disasterous weekend outing a couple weeks back. I didn't post anything but I blew up my super wahootchie 180cc GY6. It was ugly but anyway I threw in a 170cc cylinder kit and head from MRP and we're back in business.
Hate to say it but it didn't run to good in the sand with the crappy stock tires. My daughter rode her quad and I drove the buggy out to the drag strip near the back of the dunes and she smoked me everytime on her 125 .
On a good note I had one guy come over and chat with me, he thought it looked pretty cool. I told him to get a 250 at minimum if he want's to go dunning.
Your stock tires should do fine. Did you air them down to around 3-4 psi? If not they won't work for crap. CMNZ and I as well as REDYZ450 and another buddy of mine all run stockers without problems. REDYFZ450 is a 150 the others are all 250's. _________________

Hay Phil, what do you think happened to the 180cc kit? _________________ Custom Buggy http://www.buggynews.com/topic13417.html

I blame the engine failure on myself. It ran too lean and I didn't check the ghetto air filter setup. It let tons of dirt and debris into the engine. I milled the head .040" which caused the compression to go up around 10.5:1. I used the stock head with the 180cc cylinder which by itself will raise the compression. The damage was a melted piston, scored cylinder walls and burned exhaust valve.
I can tell you that for a brief time it ran friggin sweet. I was totally happy with the power it was producing. I have two more GY6 engines in the garage so I might try another 180cc kit and do it right next time.
The wife's been bugging me about how come the buggy nevers runs right so for now I'm leaving the engine alone.
I'm going to concentrate on better tires and shocks.
