After an extensive search of our Honda shop manuals at work I've been unable to find info on the GY6 . I though it was the engine from an 85 CH 150, the oldest CH 150 manual I can find is for the 87 model year, In all the manuals from 87 up the CH150 is liquid cooled . The parts listings for 85 and 86 also show liquid cooling. So obviously thats not the GY6. The only air cooled CH family scooter I can find is the CH 80 which has a totally different engine, appearance wise, than the GY6. Does anyone know ?
If I can find the correct application it's my intention to post all relevant engine specs. (torque specs , valve clearance, etc ) I thought the info may be helpfull . _________________ 05 150Sahara,10grrollers,1500 spring,redneck/ UNI,Talonaluminumexhaustmoddedby painkiller,130jet,HondaCDI&coil. best time at dirt drags to date 7.231 sponsored by Fox Auto Electric,Copes Country Store,Sign Werks & Interstate Batteries of Somerset.
I thought it was a Reflex of some sort.. I really am going off what I have heard. I do not know the histroy although there are alot of people on here that know exactly where it originated from.

That's not the same engine we have in our buggies. After reading the maintence schedule I found the recomendation for coolant change interval. Also the cylinder head diagram shows coolant passages.

That's what I found at work the CH family scooters are liquid cooled . These clone engines are definetly not from the Elite/CH150 scooter. _________________ 05 150Sahara,10grrollers,1500 spring,redneck/ UNI,Talonaluminumexhaustmoddedby painkiller,130jet,HondaCDI&coil. best time at dirt drags to date 7.231 sponsored by Fox Auto Electric,Copes Country Store,Sign Werks & Interstate Batteries of Somerset.
It needs to be noted that every page Ive seen about the history or origin of the "Honda" gy6 states that it was a "Honda designed engine originally built for the Honda Elite 125/150 and the Honda Spacy scooters", or it was the "original" design. "Honda" may have went with a water cooled top end version after the "original" design. That may explain a few things. There is more to an engine design than just the jug. The clones may be the same engine, but are just air cooled. Look at the rest of your shop manuals, is the rest of the engine the same?
Here is a little ted bit you might want to read and the link to the site.
Track Record
Yes, I did say "track record." Unlike so many other reverse engineered knock-off products produced in China, scooters have a longstanding history as a Chinese product. The gy6 engine used in Honda scooters has been manufactured in Chinese factories for decades. China runs on motorscooters. After the bicycle, motorscooters are the dominant form of private transportation. In China and Taiwan, one sometimes sees whole families on one scooter, sometimes dogs are on the scooter with their owner. The Chinese home market is vastly larger than the American or European markets and, for over a decade, Chinese products have dominated sales to developing countries. This does not mean that all Chinese factories know what they are doing. There is little regulation and quality products must be ferretted out.

The Four-Stroke Engine
All of the four-stroke scooter engines are built on the same design Honda perfected with their 35cc back in the very early 60's. It has been lauded as the nearly perfect engine design for economy and longevity.
Some small changes have been made from one manufacturer to another but the basic proportions of bore to stroke, the head design (combustion chamber), the valve placement, are all the same. Contracted for Chinese manufacture by Honda in the 1980's and the subject of much litigation, the GY6 engine, in 50cc, 125cc and 150cc flavors, is the descendant of this earlier engine, has become the work horse of the industry, and is currently manufactured by over 20 companies in China alone. One interesting aspect of this engine design is it is capable of nearly 12,000 RPMs or even more. _________________ 2005 Talon GX 150 UNI FILTER, 127.5JET,10gram rollers,1500clutch spring,39 tooth sprocket,Dazon bolt on muffler mount & high flow exhaust NGK IRIDIUM plug

The oldest shop manual I could locate is for the 87 model year ,I've also acessed the parts database back to 1985 . The engines shown in both don't appear to have any common parts with the "GY6" on these buggies. I'll research this further as time allows .
I'm not trying to be a knowitall or anything just figured I'd post what I'd found. This started when I ordered an exhaust gasket for an 85 CH 150 to use on my buggy . It wouldn't work so I had our parts guy verify the part # and applicaction. After looking at the exploded views I realized it's a different engine. _________________ 05 150Sahara,10grrollers,1500 spring,redneck/ UNI,Talonaluminumexhaustmoddedby painkiller,130jet,HondaCDI&coil. best time at dirt drags to date 7.231 sponsored by Fox Auto Electric,Copes Country Store,Sign Werks & Interstate Batteries of Somerset.
