You can search for these things on the forum to find out more:

(relatively easy mods)

1) Most people start with opening the exhaust up (or buying a new aftermarket exhaust) if required. Some stock exhausts are better than others so this may or may not be required. Along with this, a performance air filter mod such as UNI or K&N along and some sort of intake tube (redneck drainpipe mod , or aftermarket intake tube kit). Re-etting the carb will be required with one or both of these mods.

2) Another common modification for peformance on hills, sand, and other riding where increased torque is an advantage is CVT roller weight replacement with new lower weight rollers. 9 to 11 gram rollers are common as replacements on the 150 sized engines. There are also rollers available for the 250cc buggys out there.

3) Some re-gear their buggys if they are either not happy with the top speed or low end torque. Low end torque can often be gained with the roller mod so people should try that first and see if enough torque is gained for their driving needs.

4) For those that need more ground clearance or just want a more agressive stance, there are rim and tire packages available for different types of riding. You can run a search for common bolt patterns here on the forum, and we also have posts concerning ideas for available quad hubs that can fit some of the 150 buggys out there and give more bolt pattern options.

(semi advanced mods)

5) Some of the buggys come with a rather mild cam. Hotter cams are currently available for the GY6 150cc buggy engines. Some may give better high end, some better low end, some a mix of both.

6) Engine head shaving increases the compression ratio and power output of the engine.

7) A 4 Valved engine head is available for the GY6 150cc engine which allows it to breath better and increases the compression ratio at the same time.

8 ) Slide style atv-type carburetors are out there that tend to give a more crisp throttle response then the standard CV carbs that come on many of our buggys. We have many posts on available carbs, including the modifications that may need to be done in order to get the aftermarket carbs to fit properly. One down side to a higher performance carb is that they may be more sensitive to weather and elevation changes, which would require more frequent re-jetting to keep them in tune.

(advanced mods)

9) Big bore kits are available which increase the size of the cylinder and piston to give you engine a larger displacement, and therefore more power.

Many other mods are out there, but this gives you some basic information to search for on the forums. Check out the engine and aftermarket offerings forum for details, and guidance.

Steve takes the fast road while I take the rough road Wink I feel without doubt the most important upgrade you can do is getting some good shocks on the buggy. Most of these come with shocks that are extremely stiff and have little or no damping. This gives a harsh choppy ride that LIMITS your speed on trails, wears out your buggy (even causing cracked welds) and wears YOU out.

There ya go... shocks are important. Didn't mean to brush that over, but I haven't done it yet. Wink

C'mon you guys, don't you know the first mod has to be the addition of a stereo system? (I can talk.) Seriously tho, perhaps this thread can be the place where all the other discussions are distilled to help the new guy get off to a quick start (pun intended).

I would love to learn more about shock options for my Talon.

Where in the procession of upgrades do you think new tires should come in?

And what about the Mukini Carb upgrade?

Ken
