The spindle still requires around 2-3/16" diameter. So the 2-1/4 OD fits this well. But that shim 1/16" wall is thin enough for the spring to eventually jump over. Thus, using another shim on the outside with 2-1/4" ID, you can double the 5/16" wall thickness to 1/8".I hope this helps.
