Well, I have offically started moding my buggy.

I am starting with a clean slate as I just got the buggy a few weeks back Brand New. I am sporting the GY6 Yonghe 150cc motor which seems to be pretty solid (NOT SunL style). I initially thought the buggy had enough power for me and the type of riding that I do so modding was more for fun. I learned this weekend that I need a little better low end torque as I got myself in a situation on a hill that I almost didn't make it up (and that was just the first leg of hill, turned around and went home in shame). When I have a passenger there is no way I am climbing with current setup.

I am looking at the following work for my buggy:

1. CDI from BIGE for DC based system. Already installed and just started to test and make sure it worked.

2. High Output Coil from Buggy Depot.
3. NGK CR7HIX Iridium
4. High Stall Clutch from BD
5. 1500 Yellow Spring from BD
6. 9/10/12g rollers from BD
7. UNI Filter (haven't decided how to mount yet)
8. Jet carb to 125-130 depending on tuning needs.
9. 8 Magnet Stator/Flywheel Upgrade from BD
10. High Performance Battery as the factory crapped out in a week.

I have added a few items to buggy for my street legal status and toys.:

1. Turn Signals from http://dratv.com/fowhtusikita.html (they seem pretty good quality). I already has the flasher and switch on the dash with signal prewire in buggy. Just had to plug lamps in.
2. Called Baja Motorsports and ordered the canvas top for the Dune 250 (only $15). I will let you guys know how it fits when I get it. It is a lot cheaper the $75 for the Hammerhead one.
3. Bike Speedo/ODO. I just expoxied the Magnet to front left wheel. I haven't ran it next to our car, but seems accurate within a few MPH. I will adjust when I get around to it.
4. Looking to put a very cheap cd player with two cheap speakers for tunes.

Any suggestions on what rollers to use based on my upgrades above? I was going to move forward with 12g rollers so I don't lose to much top end as I do drive buggy on the street (trips to gas station, etc).

Additional suggestions:

1. Filter cover from Outerwears or K&N
2. 39t single roller or 37t double roller axle sprocket
3. Better shocks - The rear will fit Yamaha Blaster front shocks or Buggy Depot rear shocks - You will need to measure the front shocks so we can help you.
4. You will need a flywheel puller (available at Buggy Depot) to do the stator change
5. Walmart has a 12Ah battery (twice the stock capacity) for around $30
6. Run your lights off the stator, the stock rectifier was only designed to charge your battery and power your CDI
7. Get an additional battery to run your CD/radio that is isolated from your starter battery

Bacarabuggy it looks like you have enough to keep you busy for a while!! ...actually, once you get your first change done... you won't be able to stop. Then 3 or 4 mods later, the wife will call you inside cuz it's midnight. Then you'll think about the next mod, and how to adjust things, and what would work best, then go to bed. Wake up wondering if the buggy is safe.. then you can't concentrate at work, then you stop at the buggy on the way home before going in the house....

Just lettin' you know what your in for... Razz

I strongly recommend the larger axel sprocket. You don't lose much speed at all, but the grunt for those hills improves a lot.

And my lesson learned for the air intake, was make sure you have at least a 6" straight section from the filter right into the carb. Putting it right on the carb doesn't work so well...

Have fun!

Also-

Don't change everything at one time and then test it. If something's not running right, then you might have trouble isolating which thing is causing the problem.

Upgrade something, run a test, fix any issues, repeat. Smile

I had started the test and install approach. I am mostly concerned about the Rollers, Clutch/Spring Mod as I think it will take a little playing around with. I also had already purchased the flywhell puller from BD and it shoudl arrive today. I think the UNI from BD has the foam cover on it already does it not? If not I will pick one up.

And yes, my wife has already been yelling at me saying "Stupid Car", blah, blah. I am including my son in the mods (he is only three, but loves sitting in the buggy) so that helps a little.

The good thing is I live 1 block from the mountains in my area and there are tons of trails, etc just one block from my community. No mud since Arizona is bone dry, but a lot of fun.

I will snap some pictures along the way.

Correct, that UNI filter is 2 stage, with outer foam, but you can also get a thinner sleeve they call a precharger cover overtop that as well. Still breathes... better safe then sorry. I'm saying that, cuz my buggy is sitting while I wait for new piston rings... a poor air filter was part of the problem. Then again, lots of mud around my local mountains.

The roller change is laughably easy. The hardest part is getting all those little bolts off the CVT cover.

Hi guys, need a little help with my buggy mods. I got the rollers, clutch, spring and new belt installed. Everything with the CVT seems okay, but I am noticing an issue more now that I have changed the CVT parts.

When everything was stock I would get what seems like a little jump/slip somewhere in the drivetrain when I was laying into the throttle. Now that I have changed the parts it seems that this issue has gotten worse. There are no clunking noises just a very short jump/slip in something. I am having issues getting my chain and sprokets aligned now that I loosened the main bolt that holds the back of the motor up (and also allows me to adjust chain tension). Is the jumping/slipping related to the chain? I think I may end up putting spacers on drive axle sproket as I have tried everything to move motor over a little bit (breaker bar while screwing nut down, etc).

It is only off a little bit where I can still drive it without binding.

If your sprockets aren't alligning properly, I'd first check the axel bearings. It's a straight axel you have? If those bearings are bad, the axel will slip side to side... and cause your sprockets to fall out of allignment. That would definitely cause your chain to skip... and probably come right off eventually. Cheap to replace bearings. And if you do... you're gonna have that axel off anyway, so I'd suggest changing to a larger sprocket if you can afford it. Great mod for the money. Put the back end of the buggy on blocks and try to move the axel side to side. You might also see scuff marks on the axel right beside the bearings if they're shot.

Make sure your chain is fairly tight... only a 1/2" of slack. Any more then that, and it will skip when there's pressure applied... like when you give it throttle. Maybe check the teeth on your sprockets as well for any signs of serious wear, or if any teeth are missing.

It would make sense to me that it would seem worse with CVT changes. Adding lighter weight rollers and stiffer clutch spring would increase the torque you have, and therefore increase the pressure on the chain and sprocket. Can you take any pictures to help us out?

Well I am done.

I actually didn't loose any top end speed (40mph+). Now I am wondering if my stock rollers are lighter then 14g I thought (Probably make a trip to my local post office today to find out). The new clutch and spring make a world of difference in smoothness taking off. I now have engagement as soon as I step on the gas vs. taking a bit to engage. I will probably drop down to 9g/10g rollers as 40mph is more then I need 90% of the time.

The ingnition coil has helped my idling issue I was seeing before and the CDI from BIGE works great.

I did have one thing that upset me a bit, my stator was already 8 magnet so the upgrade from Buggy Depot was a waste it seems. I went ahead an put the new one in as I am hoping it is a better quality one then stock.

Waiting on UNI until I get my JETS.

Enjoy the pics.

Question on the cooler, is this an oil cooler? Is so, is the round part in the picture an oil filter?

More pics.
