What's the trick to removing CV Shaft from the Axle to get the rear brake rotor off of a Hammerhead 250SS? I disconnected the right swing arm and took apart the inside CV joint near the chain. It seems like the rest of the CV cup should just slide off the axle, but I can only rock it back and forth less than an 1/8 of an inch. Any Suggestions?
Thanks,
Rob
Well i tried doing this myself and have not figured out the trick yet i put it all back together and saved it for a winter project.
Dealer laughed when i asked him how to do it. He said took 3 days first time he tried to disassemble it. Told me he tried everything including chaining one side to a dumpster other side to axle and another chain to hook up to a fork lift. As he said what better then a 5000 pound slide hammer to separate it. So he tried it and ripped the corner off the dumpster axle still didnt separate. Told me its tricky and have to use a pickle fork is the easiest way.
In a couple months winter will be here and i will have time to figure it out. I will post a "how to" then. _________________ Darren,

Update:
After disassembling the inside cv joint, I found a dust cap in the cv cup. I removed the dust cap by drilling a small hole in the center and screwed a screw in the hole against the axle until the dust cap popped out. With cap out, I can see the end of the axle now. The axle has a c-clip holding the CV cup on. I can't get the c-clip, just not enough clearance. I bought some dental picks from Harbor Freight and still can't get clip off. Clearance between axle, clip and CV cup is super tight, not sure how they got the clip on in the first place!
Super frustrated, just want to get a broken brake rotor replaced, which seems like a simple maintanence item. Rotors wear out and break everyday.
Any help or insight will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rob

I had the dust cap off and saw the splined shaft but didn't see the clip. If you get the clip off can you put it back on? Dealer did mention a round clip in a square hole or something like that. And said its kinda like a kids toy block thing that you have to line it up or you will never get it out. Call 780.962.2768 I think the mechanics name is Alex.. I may be wrong on his name just ask to talk to the head mechanic. _________________ Darren,

The snap-ring just looks like a round ring, doesn't look like it is keyed to line up with the axle spline to remove it. It fits real loose, it seems like if you could push the rotor base and CV cup on the axle about an 1/8 inch further on axle, the clip would basically just fall out. No luck, rotor base is tight against the ridge on the axle.
The phone number you posted is for your dealer? What time zone are you in? I am in eastern standard time.
I called my Dealer, who called someone who also suggested using a pickle fork. I wasn't wild about the pickle fork, because I figured it would cause the c-clip to break off the end of the axle, but I tried it. Yes, it did cause part of the end of the axle to chip off. With the axle chipped, you can get a pair of needle nose pliers in there and remove the clip. Once I replaced the rotor, I put the c-clip back and used JB Weld to epoxy the chipped pieces back on the axle. Not a great solution, just glad to finally get the rotor replaced.
If you are going to try the pickle fork, just use one of the prongs to limit the amount of axle that you chip off.
Our technician uses a pry bar on either side and pops the "C" clip. He can do it very quickly. Hammerhead tells us the "C" clip is not needed, so we leave it out. The pressure from the wheel will hold it on. _________________ Sincerely,

I think its crazy that they would tell you the c clip is not needed.... I would not trust my life or my loved ones life that that axle will not pull apart at 60 mph without a c clip. What if hammerhead was wrong? _________________ Darren,
