First off the cover keeps debris from making contact with the CVT. Second the cover acts as a schroud so as to circulate air sucked in from the variator fan to cool the CVT.I have seen the CVT get as high as 300 plus deg.after a hard run,it would get much warmer without the cover, due to not moving air ACCROSS the cvt therefore dissipating the heat generated by the clutch and belt. I know several people that run their buggies with the CVT covers off. You take a huge risk that the belt is not going to get damaged as debris will be hitting hit all the time. The clutch and the variartor will get a lot of dirt on them...
Personally I can't really run mine without the cover as that's how my muffler attaches, so no cover, no exhaust which is not a good thing...
Running it without the cover to troubleshoot a problem should be okay. However I wouldn't recommend running it due to the simple fact that your going to take a chance of wearing everything out faster.
Hey, it's your call... _________________ Chris Dierkens
