What im saying is sure the uni would outflow a paper filter on a larger displacement engine. I just dont think a paper air filter is restricting a 150 -250cc. And a paper filter will filter far more dirt out then a foam or gauze filter. I may be wrong but im going to test it.

Also the benefit of a paper filter is simply blow it out from the inside with compressed air to clean it no need to buy special cleaners and special oil like you do for foam and gauze.

I'll be interested to see your results Steeda... the chrome filter is only paper, which is why I'm considering another cover of some sort since I can't oil the paper. I don't ride in sand storms, but endless donuts kick up a LOT of dust (...kinda why I keep doing it!) Just a bit paranoid about particles getting into the carb, and into the engine (worst case scenario)

In a dirty environment a paper filter will need cleaning sooner then foam or gauze because they trap everything. I'm going to do testing so we can find if we can use the best filtering without losing performance. I think its possible because 150 and 250s don't require the air that a 600 would require for instance. On larger displacements a paper filter would restrict power for sure.

OK... kind of a good news/bad news scenario now.

I took off the stock airbox and snorkel, and the new filter I have fit without any serious modification... same size hoses believe it or not. Looks sharp... but (and there's always a but...)

Took off the carb to clean it thoroughly, decided to tinker with the main jet to compensate for the added air. Then of course, drillled out the exhaust a bit. Started 'er up.. and immediately idled beautifully. until I hit the gas. Bog, bog, sputter, sputter. Plug went pitch black. uh... that's a tad rich. OK.. a lot rich.

See... I only found the jet/drill chart AFTER... and I probably should have checked first. Turns out my smallest bit was equal to about a 150 jet size...(1/16) Embarassed Wow.. those things are delicate eh!!!!! I only needed around 122 to 127 because of my altitude. It started running a LITTLE smoother when I drilled out the exhaust a bit... but I stopped myself from going drill-happy when I realized I over-did it on the jet. So now I gotta wait for some new jets before I take it out again. (insert curse words here)

Mike,
Glad to see you did the mods. Not that hard, huh? You are slowly but surley becoming a true buggy tech. I still have that charger if you want it. Just need a mailing address. Pm it to me when you can.

Also, just an FYI: I tried the 125,127.5, and 130. The 127.5 seemed to be right until I went up to about 6000 ft then it ran a bit lean. I have the 130 in it now and it seems to be ok. I will of course have to redo it all once it is up and running again. Its really difficult for us, since we change altitude so much. You may need 2 jets, one for valley floor, and for going to work (lucky dog) and then another for when you climb the peaks. Let us know how it goes.

Also I saw your post about facebook, I do not have one and dont plan on it, but please keep my email address, and send me yours just incase.

Everyones talking about UNI or K&N filters for better air flow... anyone used anything else? Got one like this for free new in the box... just wondering if there would be any reason not to use it. Anyone?

Ben most of uni and k&n filters will fit right in the carb. as far as jetting goes need the numbers off the carb and what carb is on it so we can see whats in it now. Most slipon mufflers will fit and free up the ponies.

get that thing dirty Very Happy

Results are in...

I tried it and power was basically the same as a UNI but -BIG BUT- is i had it on for 3 days...rode 2-3 hours a day...
I was also testing MRP racing coil. And the machine started sputtering 2 hours in to my coil change so i was thinking the coil probably overheated and was giving a poor spark. So i put the stock coil back in no change...I start trouble shooting....turns out after 6ish hours of riding the filter is too dirty to breath. (barely over 1 tank of gas) Sad So in a reasonably clean environment they are a good option (grassy areas and such) But dirt roads or dirt trails...not a very good choice.(even a poor choice)

-Back to the drawing board. Going to try K&N

Possibly might be your sputtering problem......try blowing it out and running it brand new clean and see if machine still sputters before you try another 5 different jets:P

Thanks Steeda... that kinda sucks. My new filter looked so pretty all covered in chrome!! But I think you're right. I noticed a lot of dust falling out of it when I tapped it out the other day. My foam filter addition to the outside only helped trap the mud and larger particles, but it's the fine dust that worries me. I REALLY don't want to have to replace rings.

I'm going to shop for a Uni... all the trails out here are really dusty, too dusty for a paper filter I think. It was worth a try though.
