Hi all,

2008 Joyner 650 Sand Spider.

Been using all summer with no issues. All of a sudden one morning it was extremely hard to start. Once I got it started it ran rougher than normal and had excessive smoke coming out of the valve cover vent (I mean it looked like a chimney). It is burning a lot of oil Crying or Very sad.

I don't have much mechanical experience, but if it is burning that much oil, I would have to think I've broken a piston ring. I can't think of anything else that would allow that much oil to burn and exit via the valve cover vent.

Pulled the plugs and they are covered in a black carbon.

I'll do a compression check on it next weekend (the buggy is 4 hours from home), but is there anything else this could be other than the piston ring?

The buggy was new in the spring and I did the change the oil after 5 hours of use. Bought it at an auction, so I'm guessing I have pretty much "nil" for warrenty.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

Thanks.

smoke coming from the valve cover vent usally means the is alot of blow by in the cylinders. could be the valve stem seals, or valve guides. carbon on the plugs usally means oil

does it smoke when you first crank it up?

Yup,

Smokes immediately upon startup and doesn't stop.

Given I don't have much mechanical experience, I have to ask.... Is there are way to test for the valve issues you've described?

Thanks.

What you're describing sounds like piston damage. A compression test will tell the tale. Has someone besides you been using your buggy? You would know at the end of your last run that there was a serious problem - could be that someone beat the snot out of your ride without you knowing about it!

Nope...no one could have used it without me knowing. I actually used it late one night and it started and ran fine for the short (1 mile or so) trip I took. Next morning I went to move it and had trouble getting it starting. Thought I had flooded it.

When I finally got it started, this whole smoking thing started.
