I was looking into snowmobile engines for an engine swap for a dune 150 and was wanting to know what I would need to do the complete swap. Alot of motors on ebay come with a clutch and maybe some wiring or carbs. Lets say I was looking into a polaris 440 that has the carbs and clutch shown in the photo. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&ite m=260258192182&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016. What are all the parts that I would need to make this motor complete and into the buggy. How do set up the chain drive and cvt? I would like to start a project like this soon and have help with welding. I just need everything to get started. Thanks for any suggestions. Billy.

you will need some kind of a gear reduction jackshaft or your buggy wont have any low end power. most snowmobiles have around 2:1

i would go with a polaris ATV transmission, this way you would have neutral and reverse. with the right one you can get low forward also. look on evil bay they go for around $100

Big Kid thanks for the response. As you can tell I'm still learning about these types of motors.
The gear reduction jackshaft. Would that be part of a polaris transmission you are talking about, or would that be another jackshaft I would have to set up? Is that difficult to get done?

the polaris transmission will have the gear reduction already.

the snowmobile engine will mount fairly easy if it has the 4 mounts on the bottom of the engine case. what engine you planing on using.

I'm not to sure of the engine yet. I've been shopping around a bit on ebay. Polaris 440, Yamaha phazer 480, etc. Any ideas,I'm open for suggestions. Something that won't break the bank. I'm looking for good torque for some steep hill climbing and trail riding. I also want to be able to keep up with the other ATV's in the open areas.

i think those phazers mount funny in the chassis. your wanting a engine that has the 4 mounts on the bottom of the engines.

sure cant beat the 440 exciter engines. fan cooled, reliable and indestructable. around 50-55 HP

i have a 79 yamaha exciter 440 that i put around here for the winter time....

My opinion, and only my opinion I would go a liquid cool add a rad , change jets good to go! But theres a million 480 phazers out there! They're not that $ and they last forever!I have 3 81 440 srx motors with just under 90 hp but I wouldn't put them in a kart.I think u need to figure out what u r going to use the kart for and make a dis.Let us know we're here 4 u!!

the phazer (like the SRX mentioned above) has what i call the funny engine mounts. they wanted a low center of gravity so the engine mounts near the center of the two lower engine cases. would work but more difficult to mount in my opinion.

the polaris is a free air engine meaning it relies on the movement of the snowmobile to keep the engine cooled. no fan cooling on this one. your buggy will be limited to air movement seing the engine is mounted in the back and the snowmobile engine is mounted in front. could still work though and price looks good....

I would stay away from free air because they wont cool as well standing still. Not enuogh air flow.U will most likely be using your kart in the summer time when its hot.U should think about availabilaty of parts for any engine.
