If it runs fine for a few minutes and then dies...it sounds like you are running out of fuel. It sounds like you are running the fuel that is in the bowl and then you are out of fuel because the delivery is not keeping up with the demand.
The other scenario...As far as the black plug....try this: Put in a new plug. Remove the air filter alltogether. Run the kart without the air filter on clean pavement as to not suck up any dirt in the carb. Then remove the plug and check the color. If it is a nice brown color, then your air filter is clogged. Either replace the air filter or go to a UNI type of filter. It just sounds to me like your air/fuel ratio is off. You are getting too much fuel and not enough air.
This doesn't sound like a serious issue at all. One that should be easily resolved if you just follow the advice given to you from everyone on this thread. Process of elimination will get to the bottom of this. Good luck and keep us posted. _________________ Twister modded 150

-If the fuel delivery isn't keeping up...what can I do about that?
-How do I know the fuel/air ratio is correct? I don't have a degree in this stuff but am trying to learn!
-Thank you very much for taking the time to post your ideas!

If the fuel delivery isn't keeping up it is because the fuel filter is on backwards or clogged. You said you removed the fuel line from the carb and turned the buggy over and had good flow right? Was the filter attached when you did this? You don't have a typical petcock on your tank(the kind with a reserve or off switch), you have a pulse type of petcock. The pulse type of petcock is similar to a fuel pump. When the engine is running, it pulses air through the intake and operates a venturi on the petcock which in turn pushes fuel through the fuel line and into the bowl on the carb.
You will know the fuel/air ratio is correct when the plug is a nice brown color.
Let's just start by eliminating some things before jumping into anything else. Try the things I mentioned above first. These are simple tests to eliminate some possible causes to your problem. _________________ Twister modded 150
