Ok, as promised pics of strut rebuild... but way late (I could tell you how busy work has been -- but I am still not proud of my self for not posting pics earlier).
Many thanks to Jackster for his incredibly detailed help with this project... & all of you ... As now I have some very tough/durable struts on my GTR !!!
1st strut was a bit lame, they lathed some short bushings to fit on top of the "Com (shperical) Bearing" between the 16mm, grade 8 bolt we used (not very impressed as it needed retorqued often), although the second attempt I was pleased with, as they lathed the bolt head to the proper taper needed (Jackster, I couldnt finda grade 8 bolt w/the smaller allen head yours had) & is greasable too -- see pic below
Machine shop crew was a good group of guys but (my project got shifted down to Junior)... due to too many labor hours ended up costing me almost $1000 bucks on this two strut fab. (I guess I Paid to Play -- should have done the welding myself)
They did however get this done in time for our Mem. Day Bash @ Moses Lake Dunes, where it got thoroughly torture tested by my son, & has stood up to the test of time since -- & has been ridden hard...
Very tough/longlasting struts now (remember we broke 3 struts & the 4th was almost trash before this mod), Thanks for everyones help on this.

TF, That sure looks like good and sturdy job they did for you.
I'm glad it stood up to the rigorous (I'm sure it was) testing.
If your youngster manages to break these, I'll be very surprised Wink

Actually the Allen bolt that is on my struts is lathed down to size too. Like yours to prevent it from hitting the bearing ring. Just the other way around, on mine the bearing ring is tapered and the bolt straight. Result is the same.

I like the fact that it's greasable, that's something to do on my struts too.

What type of com bearing did you find for them? I recall you saying they were a bit hard to find. Are they the same dimensions as mine (for when I need some new ones).

I'm glad my bit was helpfull...

Jackster
