i don't know how your buggy is wired but i had a problem like that when my buggy was new, blown fuse.
it wouldn't start until i put a new fuse in it, got to checking and the little wires from the the starter selinoid that plug together in electrical box were loose not making good contact, arking i think.
i crimp the connector so they were tight and haven't had that problem since.
might not be your problem but it don't hurt to look at all wire connestors and grounds to make sure they are tight.
hope that helps

I am getting an intermittent start up issue. Im not sure if it is the starter or the switch yet, but sometimes the buggy starts up fine with the key, and other times, the key does not work at all, and I have to jump the buggy at the solenoid. I wonder if it is a bad fuse or something to that effect...

Disconnect your rectifier and see if the short goes away. You will have full use of the buggy with it except your battery will not charge.

Hot wire your switch to see if the switch or solenoid is at fault. Since it works by shorting the solenoid posts, you know the starter is fine.
