Ok, so back in Jan, I bought an 07 Kinroad XT150GK (thats what the book says anyways)

I had only played on mostly flat ground with a few minor hills until this past weekend. I had never had an issue with anything (other than not climbing some hills I knew she wouldnt climb) until Saturday.

It was a 30 mile ATV/UTV ride for charity... I decided to take the kart so my 3 year old could go... All went well for awhile, until the big hills appeared LOL. Now I know some of these hills were way to steep for me to ever even think i could climb with this thing, but most were not that bad. I am trying to find a way (a cheap way) to make these hills possible. I have seen many posts about CVT rebuilds, and rejetting, but but i want to get the the best advice for my terrain and such.

I live in north Idaho, Between Spokane, WA and Missoula, MT. The terrain is mountain trails. ( www.silvermt.com is one of the mountains ) I read about all these mods, and then I have a guy at work (who I trust) telling me not to waste money b/c it may change the power band out of where I need it. I'm just curious, where do I need it, and how can I get it there?

I also noticed that the stock CVT gets real hot under extreme use. I actually had a bit of smoke coming out of the case once when i was stuck. Is there a way to cool this? Is there a need to replace the clutch? (Still pulls just as it did after smokin' it)

Also.. Is it possible to change the tranny to something like a ATV? No clutch, but still shifting. I have no clue about any of this, and really had no intentions on modding, until the thing wouldn't do what all the other ATV's did (hehehe)

Bottom line is I want to be able to climb, I dont care about top speed. I am doing 35-38 now with just me in it, 25-30 is fine by me...LOL Here it's all trail riding or road riding, and the trails are the fun riding. I just want to get this thing to be able to handle itself on a reasonable trail.

Also, on the GY6 how much oil does it take? My manual doesn't say. Also, what would be a good spark plug upgrade? Are there any other fluids needed in the engine or CVT? Like I said, my english manual doesn't say, and I cant read chinese LOL

Thanks for the help

Rusty

welcome to buggy news. the engine takes almost a quart of oil. I like royal purple, mobile one, belray, and amsoil. 10w40

for hill climbing the best bang for the buck is to change the rollers to a 9 gram ( works good for hilly areas ) main spring, and clutch springs.

the rubber boot on the front of the cvt cover is restcktive, I took mine off of the wifes buggy and replaced it with some uni foam filter material, lets alot more air in.

you can also replace the stock air box with a pipe and uni filter and rejet the carb, then do the exhaust.

I have done these to the wifes 150 and it pulls her and my daughter up some nice hills very well

Don't know how much good a PC fan will do, or how long it will hold up. The variator fan moves quite a bit of air by it's self. The outlet is smaller than the inlet so you can only move so much air through it. The majority of the heat is clutch and belt slipage. Anything you do to reduce that will help in the heat dept. Lighter rollers will keep you in a lower gear when climbing hills and the "torque" spring will keep a tighter grip on the belt. My GY6 came with no boot or filter on the inlet. I've had no problems caused by dirt. I ran it hard for 3 years and I'm still on the original belt. The covers been off 3 times in 4 years. There has been some dust in there, but not bad. In fact on my 250 I ran w/o a cover all last year with no issues, and I know Jabo has in the past. The only reason it's off on mine is I have to remove the axle to install it and it's a pain. Once I'm sure of my clutch and roller setup I'll put it back on. I'd recomend trying no filter or boot after you install the rollers and spring and see if that cools you down some. Do not drive the 150 w/o the cover. There is a support bearing on the inside of the 150 cover for the clutch shaft.

Thanks for the tips...

As far as the fan, I would look at that option as an on when engine is off type deal... just to allow it to cool a bit faster. I really coulda used that this past weekend.

So what i am looking at so far is...
9gram rollers, 1500 spring and yellow springs?

As far as oil, i went and bought Honda 10w40 at the local honda shop.

Which NGK plug is the right one?

Also, how much louder is the 150 with a gutted stock pipe?

I would start w/ the rollers and the 1500 spring. I think the yellow clutch springs raise the engagement rpm. This could be a problem on the steeper hills. As the engine slows down the clutch will start to slip sooner. It is probably best to do the mods 1 or 2 at a time so you can evaluate what each is doing for you. If you let the engine idle for a few mins after your run it will help cool of the cvt. It still moves a decent amount of air at idle.

also don't forget about a sprocket change i think yours?? has double row sprockets BIGE and KIDNME can get you the 37 tooth axle sprocket.that will give you better take off and hilling climbing a big plus on trailing riding.
also when you do your mods after reading what you wrote about cvt being hot, i would look at clutch pads and make sure they are not glazed.you can take some fine sand paper and take the glaze off the pads.also get some emery cloth and work on the clutch bell,go ACROSS the clutch bell all away around it good, that away the scratch marks will be the way the clutch pads gets a bite.
i'm not going against your buddy but the mods you are wanting to do is were it will put you into the powerband you need for that type of riding.
i have learned alot here from the other members,i had never had a belt driven machine before.these 150's with a few mods will impress you and others,i know i have cause a couple of lips to hit the ground when i went up some thing they thought it wouldn't. i liked every minute of it Laughing Laughing

Change the sprocket if you can. That will help on the hills tremendously.
