Im pretty much decided on building the Ubuildit.com shredder to start off. If I build a 2nd one I will use what I learn the first go around and maybe build one with suspension and an atv running gear.

Sounds great! Go for it and have fun. You will learn alot along the way, outgrow it, give it to your nephew and he'll have fun.
Then you can get more serious with relation to your engine, brakes, and suspension, and build a much better one that really kicks butt! _________________ DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!!!!!!!

Thats what I was thinking. I would rather build something somewhat simple and have it turn out really well than try to build something more complex and cool and have it turn out JUNK. Has anyone else out there built a Shredder? Im wondering what the best setup for the drive sprocket will be with the Torq-A-verter setup and 25'' rear tires.

industrial engines really dont work well for buggies. They are made to run 3600 rpm for hours at a time and produce power at very specific rpm range. It is not that you cant do what you are talking about, but once you get to working on it you will find there is a lot a fabing up to get the engine to work with the suspention and make a nice cart. When you change engines that all starts over. It may sound backward but you would be alot better off getting the perfect engine and then designing a kart around it. It is just too much work to redesign and fabricate to change to a different engine after the fact. A motorcycle engine or an atv engine will work much better than any of the industrial engines out there. And no the 7 hp engine you have wont get you to 40 mph unless you strap it to your butt and jump off a cliff. |
Do you have any first hand knowledge to qualify this? Combined with a good CVT and industrial engine works very well in a buggy so long as you are happy with approx 45mph top speed. An industrial engine may not put out lots of horsepower for its displacement vs an motorcyle or atv engine but it will produce far more torque. I have driven lots of 250cc commercial buggies and a 16hp and 23hp industrial engined buggies. For trail riding the sheer grunt of the industrial engines was great. I would ditch the 7hp in favour of something with 13+ hp. Remember with an industrial engine for every horsepower you will get around 1.6 ft-lbs. Just make sure your CVT can provide you with overdrive.
My current project is using a modified Briigs 627cc 23hp V-twin.
It redlines at just under 6000rpm, makes 30hp and around 50ft-lbs.
We are talking about $200 in mods to get this extra performance.

I am thinkin I may or may now end up putting a larger engine in the first one. If it is really lame I will toss in a 13hp engine. If its ok I think I will just build a 2nd buggy with a bigger engine.
I think I will build the shredder first them try building something with a suspension next.

My plan is to build a simple light kart and use the engine I have. what should I set it up with? Princess Auto has the Comet Torq-A-Vert. Is that the right one for this engine? If I run a 25 inch rear tire what sprocket should I run? Would running a 22 inch tire be way better? I want to ride the kart on logging roads up on a mountain my buddy lives on so i need it to climb hills well. Top speed isnt so important as long as it will do 30 or so.
