After spending my free daylight hours trying to bring my buggy out of hibernation I think I have finally got close to my problem. Symptoms are: Not starting and what seems to me to be a rather erratic spark.
Here is what I have done so far:
Cleaned the "peanut-butter" out of the carb. Now its shiny inside.
Changed the ignition-coil with a known working one.
Changed the CDI with a known working one.
Checked, and the carb is getting fuel.
Tried starter fluid
When I first started trying to revive the buggy (GY6 powered Kasea AV) I was getting (I thought) no spark. So I changed the coil and then the CDI with ones from a working buggy. Charging a battery and using the starter to test for spark (instead of the kick start and a friend) I can see a storm of sparking and then nothing for a few seconds...then another storm of sparks. What can cause this?
More information: The buggy was running bad before it got put up for the winter. It was bogging down when given gas and unusable. I thought that was due to the CDI going bad.
have you tried a different spark plug, the one in it might be bad and breaking down.
what about all the wire connectors on coil and cdi are they tight and making good contact.
also what color spark do you have blue or sort of a pink color,
a good blue spark is what you are looking for

Sounds like the coil wire. May have had a bad one in the other kart. Are they the same kart?
The symptoms are similar. _________________ -Tom-

When cranking your engine, make sure the supply and voltages are correct going from the stator to the CDI. Also check your engine ground wires. _________________ 07 Joyner SandSpider 650

Yes, the two karts are the same. One runs just fine the other wont start.
I have tried the spark plug off the working kart. The spark plug I am trying with the broken kart is new. When the broken kart does spark the spark is blue. The amount of time between sparks is erratic though, and when it sparks it does not just spark once but several times. Then no spark for a few seconds.
try cleaning the male electric connectors on the coil with a wire brush. then do the same to the female ends on the wires. take some pliers and lightly pinch the wires back to the coil to ensure a snug connection. _________________ Blade 150DX

Connections seem tight but I will see if they need cleaned tomorrow. Is there any chance that a short someplace could cause the problem? I have been going over all the connections and testing them. Replacing loose ones as I go. Not found a short yet.
ndsharp when you are checking for the spark at your plug are you getting the plug grounded good.i know when i have checked mine you have to really have to hold it tight up againist the head to get a good ground. just thought i would ask.
when you started to trouble shooting your problem did you look at your intake to see if it had any cracks or the rubber has let loose around the bolts holes.not trying to confuse you just reread what you wrote about the way it was running, with the bogging

When it was bogging down that was a year or so ago just before it stopped running. I took off the intake and cleaned around it and looked at the valve a little. The intake seems tight. There are a few cracks but nothing that goes clear through.
When I test for spark I am holding the sparkplug against the bolt for the seatbelt. Seems to be as good a ground as any.
I am going to pull the stator and magnet out tomorrow or this weekend. Make sure that is all clean and connected. But after that I am out of things to check aside from the valves and timing chain.... not that those have anything to do with it sparking.
Thank to you all so far. You have given me ideas of what to look at.
Your spark doesn't sound eratic. You have to figure that since the engine is a four strokes, the spark plug will essentially only produce 1 spark per 4 RPM's. If memory serves me correctly, and this is very basic, your engine has an intake stroke, a compression stroke, a combustion stroke, and an exhaust stroke. you will only see a spark on the combustion stroke.
I would say you need to check over perhaps your starter system or even your vacuum lines to be sure you have no leaks. try adjusting the screw on the carb; tighten it all the way then back it out a half a turn, try and start it for 3 seconds inbetween each half of a turn. If the rest of your system is functioning properly this will provide you with atleast a running engine.
Also check your Main Jet, if that is not the right size you will be hard-pressed to start it as well.
