1st Question.
How tight should the chain be? The Manual said no more than a half inch. So I tightened it up more than I would have on my dirt bike. I then took it for a drive, less than a 1/4 mile and the chain was back to full loose again about 3/4 inch play. And YES I tightened the bolts back very tight like they came stock. There is no torque setting but I needed a breaker bar to get them loose and I would say they are just as tight as stock now.
2nd Question.
The dealer took off the stock air filter and put on a K&N. But it looks like the that filter is suppose to provide clean air to the CVT. Am I wrong? I am wondering if not having the stock filter on the CVT will cause wear on it?

Wow no replies yet?
I looked closer and I was mistaken about question 2. They are not connected.

The chain deal is a bit confusing. You may get some stretch on a new chain but if the adjustment bolt is tight, I can't imagine why you lose tension so quick. It should be about 1/2" of play at the most. As far as the K&N, yes, it provides MORE air into the engine. After the K&N, you will have to rejet as well. There is no "wear" associated with removing the airbox unless you are running lean. _________________ -Tom-

KidnMe,
thanks for the response. I am guessing I didnt tightend the bolts tight enough, so I will try again.
As far as the Filter, my question was not worded right. I have already rejeted.
I was talking about the stock filter box. It has two filters in one on it. It has a paper type filter going to the engine and a smaller foam filter that has an oval exhaust tube that looks the same shape as the ports on both ends of the CVT. So I thought for a minute that maybe it provided clean air to that too. And by removing it, it could cause damage to the CVT. But after looking some more I am not sure what the foam part is for.

Is it the filter for the gases coming out of the valve cover? _________________ 07 Joyner SandSpider 650

I'll have to look. If it's not one of the CVT filters, I'm stumped. I'll check in the morning. _________________ -Tom-

I have about 30 hours on my 250. It required that the chain be tightened after every ride (2 or 3 hours) for the first several times. Now it is fine. _________________ 2008 Mini Viper 800

Did you ever figure out the filter question? I am curious. If it is not the Main filter for the carb, and not the cvt filter it is likely some emissions thing. Where does it connect to? Our 250XTX has a seperate filter for the CVT and Carb, while our 250XT has one box that has 2 filters in it, one on the bottom for the CVT and one larger one up top for the Carb. If this is what you are talking about then yes you need a filter for the CVT cover. 3 ways you can go on this, 1) if it is like our 250XT box, you can actually cut the box in half and just leave the bottom part for the CVT. ( I do not love this method) 2. Get a scotch pad and use the clamp that was originally on the box to clamp it down, this will keep out any large debris that can do damage and should be fine. I ran like this for 2 years. 3. I have in stock a filter that is curved upward and made specifically for the cvt cover on a 250. You can call us if you want to purchase one. I do think that the scotch pad or the foam from an old UNI will be fine though.

These stock air boxes are still designed for when there used to be an opening in the CVT cover to allow clean air to the CVT. It serves no purpose now. On some machines that are still using the older CVT cover this stock air box is used.
