I took the carter on the steepest and roughest trails I had on my propertly last night. The open dif. on is defintley an win/loss senario. It really helps me make those tight turns and on the steep hill climbs it really helps me to keep the front end pointing the right direction with the wheels alternating traction. I have to say that I have been the victom of a stray root or rock that grabs your tire and just throws you into something or the direction you really didn't want just about the time your wheel spin has started. d'oh! The dif seems to really lesson that kind of problem.

On the other hand though, when you get a little off kilter that diff will just spin away leaving me to push this 600lb thing or trying to pile rocks and stick under the wheel. As soon as I put a winch on it I don't think I will care as much but you really have to take the good with the bad. Rolling Eyes

Is the open differential new to the GTR300? The GTR250 used a chain drive to half shafts which I didn't think were connected through a differential.

On the first GTR's a diff was optional.
I have the EU version they all came fitted with the diff.
With the hard axle as an option.

I drove the US version with hard axle too.
But it seemed to be a bit dangerous for on road driving.
So I choose the diff.

I admit in the rough it can be a bit of a trade off.
But you learn to anticipate for it. Choosing your track knowing that it's there. Only got stuck once.

I do plan on taking some pics this weekend if the weather permits. Look for a post Monday in the Buggy Discussion section. Also here are a couple pics of the diff. on the 300. Now I am not a photographer but these do show how the hole thing is set up...mostly. The diff is bolted to the frame. The sprocket is bolted to the diff. The half shalves go int the diff.

Hope this helps. Everyone is right about having a diff or not. I think to each his own flavor. You can plan around the diff loosing traction that usually requires a different line or just more speed. The more speed is usually my first option. Twisted Evil

I agree...
It should have had some kind of diff lock.

The 300 radiator is placed differently than on 250.
I believe the pics shows it facing head wind on 300.

Can you take some pics how it's done.
Are there brackets or is the frame somewhat different?

there are brackets and it is facing differently. First thing I noticed at the dealership. Bad part of that is rocks are pelting the thing.

Hi Firebird,

Did you get your first decent ride yet?

For that radiator You could make an perforated aluminum plate in front of it insted of the plastic one.
The plate material comes in different hole sizes.
Or some radiator mesh they use for customizing on cars (maybe to weak).

When stock my engine tended to overheat.
Since I put on the new carb and intake, I never had any problems with it again. I think stock setting is on the lean side.
Especially when riding sustained WOT.

I would be more concerned about the hose leading to it.
Seems to come of the frame for quite a distance.
No risk of snagging it you think?

By the way... did you find the time to match the measurements I put in the 250 engine pic? Cylinder and head height, pipe OD and stuff.
