ok... here we go. I have a roketta gk06 250cc buggy i love the thing but the gear box is shot engine runs strong but i want rid of it all and im going to put a whole new motor and gearbox but i need some input on what motor i should use. i was thinking about using an old motorcycle motor about 700cc or more but thinking about it i am having problems on what to do for a final drive i was thinking a polaris sportsman setup what would be like the setup it came with but high quality. so i have been looking for input from some people that know what there doing and i figured this would be the place to be. if anyone has ideias or photos of there own custom setup please help i am tired of looking at the thing just sitting there. and if anyone wants the motor its a 250cc pm me with a realistic price... hope someone can help. ps sorry for bad spelling haha

or is there anyway i can get a new motor and use the old gearbox but put stronger gears in it? so it can bolt together better or maybe use the stock motor because it is so strong but bypass the junk gearbox. the whole buggy would be great if the gearbox was strong or if some one made aftermarket gears/internals for that gearbox

It seems the easiest transplant would be to sever the front off an ATV, sever the engine and rear end off the buggy and mount the remainder of the buggy front to the ATV rear. _________________ 08 Joyner SandViper 250

You get the comfort and safety of a buggy while getting the entire power train of a Japanese ATV. That seems a lot easier than matching up output sprockets or adding jack shaft drives to axles that cannot take the additional horsepower. If you could find a 2x4 SxS that was in a front end collision or roll over, that would make a perfect donor. _________________ 08 Joyner SandViper 250

I have this same buggy and have also been looking into this option. The easiest way to pull this off is to find a stock motor and gear box that has a reverse built into it and is chain drive. This would eliminate the original motor and forward/reverse gear box.
This would still require the two upper drive sprockets be joined together with a shaft and a center sprocket in the middle to conect to the motor.
I am leaning toward a Raptor 700 motor. The Fuel Injection, computer and cooling system could be used for great reliability. That motor has a great broad torque band and can be built up to 50 to 60 HP.
Anyone know of any other motors that could be a better fit?

I'm trying to get my hands on a 660 rapter motor, I've
had a 660 rapter for 3 yrs now and think that would
be the best transplant for my 250 joyner, I think a 660
would be cheaper and easier to find, compared to the

Hey Guys,
Be aware the early model Raptor motors had inherent problems with the gearbox too weak. They will blow out 2nd gear and or reverse. They did make an upgrade to this design but it entails complete disassembly of the motor (split the cases) this is not something you want to try unless your pretty skilled. So if you find a deal on an 01 to 03 be aware, ask if it has the upgrade.

Ive seen several transplants and the ones that work the best are snowmobile engins. The problem with a quad engine, espesially a large one is you have to re-engineer and re-build the back end to get them to work. A polaris engine or a snomobile engine uses the same type of drive as the karts we have so you can mount the engine above the sprocket instead of in front. Ive seen a couple of quad conversions and a street bike conversion and they were very complicated and didnt work very well. One street bike conversion ive seen worked very well but he totally redesigned the rear end to make it longer and make it run with independant rear axles which he fabricated out of u-joints since cvs didnt have enough traval. He said he had about 4000.00 in the swap not counting his time, and he had the ability to design and build it himself. Way too much time and money to my way of thinking.

We have also considered the snow mobile motors but most of them do not have reverse. The stock gear box for forward/reverse may handle the power however, I think there is a problem with the direction it is currently installed. (Would have to drive it in reverse=wrong gear ratio)
My friend/neighbor is very well versed in fabricating chassis's and motor transplants and we have been working on this option for a while.
The snow mobile (Or any other motor w/o reverse) motor would require a lot of custom fabrication and the purchase of a new forward/reverse gear box. This adds a lot of expense to the project and complicates matters.
A 660 or 700 Raptor motor seems to us to be one of the best possibilities. The only fabrication would be installing motor mounts and the shaft to link the two wheel drives together. I was leaning toward the 700 motor due to the problems with the 660 gear box's. Plus the EFI would be beneficial.
As for the snow mobile motor, this option would create a monster. My neighbor also has a 800cc Joyner that he is installing a 180hp snow mobile motor in right now. He had to locate a forward/reverse gear box to handle the power and he is currently working out the issues with the exhaust and drive train. This is definitely a major project that should only be attempted by an experienced fabricator/designer/engineer. My neighbor built and raced cars on the West Coast Nascar circuit in the 70's and 80's and nows how to make this happen.
