I know what you mean. That Alternative Minimum Tax is just wrong. The calculate how much in taxes you should pay, you pay that amount and then they say, "Wait, you made that amount, you should have to pay at lest this.." The AMT will start to hit more and more people as it wasn't indexed to inflation when it was implemented. It's so frustrating.
Gotta go see my accountant...

Heard that. and most americans are like sheep and just go along with it. Here is what I wrote to our state government concerning their latest tax grab:
Dear Delegate:
Maryland taxes are enough. Please do not support the Governors Proposals. I believe we can maintain a state balanced budget by cutting and stopping certain allocations. “Cut and stop spending On what?”, you ask.
Well, to start, how about anything that wasn't funded last year.
The Governor's new tax plan is a bad first draft. I keep hearing we need to pay
our "fair share." Can you please define, fair share? Some facts about me to help:
1) I am married
2) never had the police, fire, ambulance visit my house
3) I am almost 40
4) I save a significant portion of my income for my own future retirement
5) I have one child now in the public school system, He’s been there for 3 years. I've been paying taxes for 22 years.
6) I do drive a lot
7) My company provides healthcare for my family and our employees.
Now, What is my fair share? You should be able to answer that question from the above facts and not need to know how much money I EARN.
If I go to a grocery store to buy an apple, the grocer tells me the apple costs $0.50. It doesn’t matter whether I have $0.25 or $25000.00 in my pocket. WHY DOES MY INCOME MATTER TO MR. O’MALLEY?
Sincerely,

Pretty good thoughts, and some pretty simple questions that you'll never get answers to from a politician. Why not calculate how much you'll need for the fiscal year, with a buffer of course, and divide it equally among the populace? Probably way over-simplified, but the current system puts too much weight on the backs of responsible, hard-working citizens, and allows criminals and irresponsible/lazy people to feed off the government trough with very few restrictions or requirements. To lower our taxes substatially, how about making birth control for welfare recipients mandatory, such as gov't funded Norplant or something similar? If you get pregnant while on welfare, benefits stop. How about another requirement that is mandated by a large number of employers, but not our gov't for social services -- random drug testing. If you fail a drug test while on any social service, you should be barred from receiving future services for a specific amount of time; maybe 24 months? There definitely needs to be some reform for both how taxes are collected and how they're spent. The budget for FY2008 already has some 8000 earmarks, which is another huge problem in itself. _________________ LJ Tech 1100cc Sand Sport -- Working the bugs out...
