Everything is stock. I moved clip on needle up one and I tried to adjust airscrew but didnt help. The way I drift start, My 7year old gets in put in neutral, Then Dad starts pushing and he puts in first gear and it will start but he has to take off and after couple trip around yard its good. It will idle good. I did have gas tank crack but it is fixed. It still backfires.

Sometimes this problem is caused by insufficient fuel flowing to the carb, once engine runs a while it causes the vacuum to have pressure thus making it seem "ok". Usually caused by 1)bad gas 2) clogged fuel line filter 3) vacuum tube possibly leaking. 4) mal-adjusted carburetor jets, but this if it runs ok once it has been running this isnt the culprit.

Does yours have the manual choke on it? Our does and it helps greatly! It is hard to see, but ours has a sticker indicating how to use the choke.
It also helped to put on a stronger battery than what came stock too. Also, have you changed the oil in it? I changed the Chinese molasses dirty diaper out of it and put some normal oil in it and that also helped it crank better.
Even with those changes, when it is cold none of our buggies seem to start easily.

Hello, One of our 90cc Raiders was hard to start. The problem and solution was to adjust the valves.
The exhaust valve adjustment was leaving the valve open a tiny bit and thus compression was low and end result hard to start. Back firing could also be experienced.
I good way to diagnose low compression is to take the plug out put your thumb over the plug hole hit the starter and see if you can hold your thumb in place, if so low compression.
Next step (keep plug out) adjust valves (easy) can be done with engine in place with two/three tools. First pull the 2 valve cover nuts (big nuts on head) feel by hand if one rocker arm seems tighter or looser than the other. Use starter to move engine to many points in compression cycle and keep feeling by hand. In my case it was obvious the exhaust rocker arm was too tight.
Next to adjust vales a small socket is used to loosen the nut holding the valve adjustment screw on the rocker arm. Turn valve adjusting screw by hand till rocker arm wiggle is small to gone. Here is where a feeler gauge can be used; but for testing TBT (tighten by touch) can be used. Tighten nut back and re-try holding finger over plug hole when engine is turned over. In my case I went from holding all compression back with my finger to a nice pop. Problem solved.
I hope this helps.
Pete
